I think it\u2019s fair to say that come to next Australia Day, there needs to be a special award category for parents of young children who survived home learning during the lockdowns. Let\u2019s be honest \u2013 it\u2019s been brutal! So many parents had to juggle their own full-time work, running a household, AND supervising a day\u2019s worth of learning for often, multiple children!\u00a0<\/span>Research from Macquarie University<\/span><\/a>\u00a0showed that many parents spent up\u00a0to 14 hours a week in their role as home learning\u00a0managers\u00a0and 9\/10 parents reported the experience as, quite understandably, stressful!\u00a0As a mum of older teens and young adults\u00a0\u2013 who are usually self-sufficient –\u00a0I\u2019m in awe!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But\u00a0the good news is \u2013 things are on the improve! Our vaccine rates are amongst the best in the world, so lockdowns have been lifted and, drum roll\u2026 kids are back at school! I\u2019ve always been a big fan of trying to find the silver lining of any situation and I think there are\u00a0many\u00a0we can take away from our COVID experience, particularly when it comes to digital parenting. I know of so many parents who have completely rethought their approach to managing kids and technology\u00a0since the pandemic hit\u00a0because of\u00a0their home learning\u00a0experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, in the spirit of sharing and caring, I thought I\u2019d round up some of the best \u2018aha\u2019 moments from parents who were forced to become expert home learning managers over multiple lockdowns. And make sure you take notes because there are some great learnings that we can apply to our digital parenting journey.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Embrace Technology<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

If you have never been \u2018all in\u2019 with your kids\u2019 use of technology for both learning and socializing, then you need to get over this ASAP. Technology is the lifeblood of your kids\u2019 lives. It\u2019s how they connect, nurture friendships, and organize their social lives. I also recommend parents try to see technology through the eyes of their kids NOT just through our more \u2018mature\u2019 lens. It\u2019s the best way of truly understanding just what a huge role it plays in their day-to-day lives. And don\u2019t forget that technology is almost always used to set up in-person catchups! So, please don\u2019t demonize it, it will only push your kids away.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding Your Child\u2019s Online Life is a Powerful Way of Connecting<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I totally appreciate that many parents didn\u2019t choose to be home learning \u2018managers\u2019 however many have shared with me how they now feel far more involved in their child\u2019s life because of the experience. Seeing first-hand how your child\u2019s day works, overhearing their conversations with teachers and peers (courtesy of Zoom), and being blown away by your offspring\u2019s tech skills has given many parents incredible insight into their child.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I know of parents who have\u00a0noticed\u00a0learning issues and friendship problems all as a result of\u00a0their home learning manager role! There\u2019s nothing like being able to nip something in the bud before it becomes a big issue! So, stay\u00a0involved and you\u2019ll reap the rewards!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Get Your Kids Moving\u00a0–\u00a0Encourage\u00a0Movement and Outdoor Activities\u00a0Always<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Confession \u2013 I have never been one of those parents who proactively organized park visits, bushwalks, and exercise regimes for my kids. But many of the parents who managed young children through a lockdown and resorted to becoming personal trainers reported that it paid dividends. So, now lockdowns are (hopefully!) history, don\u2019t forget about the benefits of getting your kids to move. It\u2019s hard to be on a screen when you are walking the dog, playing a game of family cricket, or bushwalking. I know it\u2019s time-consuming but it\u2019s so worth it! <\/span><\/p>\n

Take Some Time to Understand & Protect Your Kids\u2019 Devices<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

As of 2 years ago,\u00a0<\/span>the average Aussie household had 17 internet-connected devices<\/span><\/a> in tow so it\u2019s no wonder keeping abreast of all the devices in your household feels like a full-time job! But with kids continuing to use their devices for both study and socializing, it\u2019s essential that you give each device a \u2018once over\u2019 to minimize risks and prevent issues arising down the track. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ensuring all their software is up to date is a great place to start. Also check that the default password has been changed and that there is some top-shelf security software installed to protect the device and, most importantly, its user! And while you are there, why not also ensure that each of their online accounts has its own distinct password? If you think they could manage a password manager, then it might be time to introduce them to one? Check out McAfee\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>True\u00a0Key<\/span><\/a>\u00a0\u2013 I couldn\u2019t manage without it!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I think you\u2019d be hard-pressed to find many parents keen to return to home learning. In fact, I think there may even be a revolt if we had to go back! But, knowing we have picked up some \u2018nuggets of gold\u2019 along the way makes it a little feel a little better! So, please embrace technology \u2013 it\u2019s a fantastic way of connecting with your kids. But of course, keep your family\u2019s usage in check and minimize the risks by giving each device a once-over. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
