You want that problem fixed\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">right now<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. So much so that you may not pay close enough attention to that tech support link you found in\u00a0a\u00a0search\u00a0or came across in an ad.\u00a0Tech support\u00a0that looks legitimate but isn\u2019t.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Tech support scams\u00a0make good\u00a0money\u00a0for bad actors. In fact,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/consumer-cyber-awareness\/organized-cybercrime-the-big-business-behind-hacks-and-attacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the larger tech support scam operations organize and run themselves like a business<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, with call centers, marketing teams,\u00a0finance groups, and so forth\u2014and can rack up some serious profits to boot.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">They make their money in several ways. Sometimes they\u2019ll charge large fees to fix a non-existent problem. Other times, they\u2019ll install information-stealing malware under the guise of software that\u2019s supposed to correct an issue. In some cases, they\u2019ll ask for remote access to your computer to perform a diagnosis but access your computer to steal information instead.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Fortunately, these scams are rather easy to spot. And avoid. Something\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">urgently\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wrong. And then offers a bogus solution to the bogus problem, often at a\u00a0high cost.\u00a0Similarly, they may reach you by way of a pop-up ad.\u00a0Again\u00a0telling you that your computer or device\u00a0is in need of\u00a0urgent repair. An apparent lack of computer savviness certainly makes older users an attractive target, yet it also seems that an apparent overconfidence in one\u2019s savviness makes\u00a0younger victims susceptible to tech support scams too.\u00a0Turns out that\u00a0the\u00a0growing\u00a0majority of\u00a0victims worldwide are between 18 and 35 years old, a group that has known the internet for most, if not all, of their lives.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.microsoft.com\/apac\/2021\/07\/22\/tech-support-scams-remain-a-threat-globally-and-in-asia-pacific-despite-drop-in-encounters-microsoft-survey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">That\u2019s according to research from Microsoft\u2019s Digital Crimes Unit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which found\u00a0the 1 in 10 of\u00a0people between\u00a0the ages of\u00a018 and 35 who encountered a tech support scam fell for it and lost money.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Whatever the age group, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/blogs\/data-spotlight\/2019\/03\/older-adults-hardest-hit-tech-support-scams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">reported losses in the U.S. are into the millions<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which of course does not account for the assumedly millions more that do not go reported.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How to spot and avoid tech support scams<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">With regards to ads and search results, keep an eye open for typos, awkward language, or poor design and logos that\u00a0looks\u00a0like they could be a knockoff of a trusted brand.\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/other-blogs\/mcafee-labs\/top-tips-to-spot-tech-support-scams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Check out our blog article that offers a field guide of what these ads and\u00a0search results\u00a0look like<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Don\u2019t fall for the call.\u00a0If someone calls you\u00a0with an offer of\u00a0\u201ctech support.\u201d Chances are, it\u2019s a scam.\u00a0And if they ask for payment in gift cards or cryptocurrency like bitcoin, it\u2019s absolutely a scam.\u00a0Just hang up.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Note that the big tech companies like Apple and Microsoft\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">will not call you\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with offers of tech support or an alert that \u201csomething is wrong with your computer.\u201d Such calls come from imposters.\u00a0Moreover, in many cases, the company will offer free support as part of your purchase or subscription\u00a0that you can get on your own when you need it. Contact the company directly for support, manually type their address into your browser\u00a0or call the number that came with the packaging\u00a0or purchase. Don\u2019t search. While this can be a big task, it\u2019s a vital one.
