Last week, I waved my 18-year-old off as he embarked on the Aussie school leaver\u2019s rite of passage \u2013 Schoolies!! A week spent kicking up your heels and living life to the max without any parental supervision at all! Oh, the sleepless nights many of us parents have had! And once Christmas and New Year celebrations are done, he\u2019ll be heading away to University to \u2018live his best life\u2019 away from his dedicated cyber mother!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And of course, I\u2019m delighted for him, although secretly devastated to be losing my baby boy.\u00a0But it does prompt the question, am I now done with cyber parenting? Is my work here officially done?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Do You Ever Stop Being a Parent?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

I remember when my kids were little, my mother shared some words of wisdom with me: \u2018Alex, you never stop being a parent. The kids are the same, it\u2019s just the issues that change.\u2019 And she was so right. As our boys have grown up, we\u2019ve been\u00a0less involved in their day-to-day needs\u00a0but still very much needed. Whether it\u2019s to help\u00a0review a work contract, provide advice on an issue with a flatmate or\u00a0help pick out a suit,\u00a0the parenting hasn\u2019t stopped instead entered a new chapter. And of course, there\u2019s no doubt that having interested, devoted parents at the end of the telephone – day or night \u2013 makes navigating life so much easier!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And when it comes to their digital lives, it\u2019s the same story. While we have no reason to be involved in their day-to-day online lives, we have\u00a0definitely been\u00a0called upon to\u00a0help them\u00a0troubleshoot situations\u00a0from receiving\u00a0inappropriate messages, identifying potential scams or managing terse exchanges.\u00a0\u00a0And, might I add, I have also proactively offered my advice on the appropriateness of pictures\u00a0they have shared online – many times!!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How To Help Your Young Adult Kids Manage Their Cyber Safety?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

So, after having managed\u00a03 kids through this transition to early adulthood\u00a0with another one currently\u00a0underway, I thought I\u2019d share with you some of my best strategies for ensuring their digital life is in good shape without micro-managing them!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Stay Friends with Them Online But Don\u2019t Embarrass Them Ever<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Every few days, I\u2019ll check out my boys\u2019 socials. Not only does it give me a \u2018feel\u2019 for what\u2019s happening in their lives \u2013 where they\u2019ve been and who with \u2013 it also allows me to check they are making good decisions about what they share. There have been multiple times during this period where I have sent off a quick text suggesting they remove a photo or perhaps rephrase a comment! And while I know these texts aren\u2019t always warmly received, in nearly all cases, they take my advice!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And it goes without saying that your ability to provide input to their digital lives will only happen if you don\u2019t cross boundaries! So, never embarrass them. If you see something you don\u2019t like, message them privately \u2013 do not workshop it on their Facebook page! And if you want to post a pic or video of them, always get their \u2018ok\u2019 first.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2. Buy Them Security Software for Christmas!<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

OK, security software probably won\u2019t be top of their Christmas list, but knowing that they have comprehensive security software\u00a0like\u00a0<\/span>McAfee\u2019s Total Protection<\/span><\/a> on their devices which works hard in the background to minimize threats and issues will give you real peace of mind. This\u00a0year, I\u2019m buying my older boys an air-fryer and frypans for Christmas.\u00a0Why not continue the pragmatic theme and invest in some software for them too?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Set Up A Family Messaging Group<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

About 4 years ago, I set up a family Messenger Group and it\u2019s now something I absolutely treasure. We share pics of our cats and dog, potential family holiday dates, funny photos, and videos, and relevant news stories \u2013 particularly during COVID. But the other thing I like to share is reminders about important \u2018tech stuff\u2019, like changing passwords, when to update their Apple software or details about scams that are doing the rounds. Whether it\u2019s <\/span>Whats\u00a0App<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>Telegram<\/span><\/a>, or my personal favorite,\u00a0<\/span>Messenger<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0I strongly\u00a0recommend establishing a\u00a0family group chat\u00a0as an effective way of covering off\u00a0key issues with your young adult kids.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4. Don\u2019t Stop Walking About Digital Reputation <\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

With potential employers, partners, and even friends using Google to conduct their due diligence on you, digital reputation is everything. So, weaving constant reminders into conversations with your adult kids should still be a priority. Now, of course, some kids will instinctively \u2018get this\u2019 but others will need a few pointers. According to a\u202f<\/span>\u00a070% of employers use social media to screen candidates during the hiring process, and about 43% of employers use social media to check on current employees.<\/span>\u202fSo, why\u00a0<\/span>not encourage them to \u2018Google\u2019 themselves \u2013 and why not do yourself also? How you present online could mean the difference between being employed or unemployed!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, if\u00a0you have a school leaver in your family and you\u2019re not sure whether your job is done, I\u2019m here to confirm that\u00a0you\u2019ll still be required for a\u00a0very long time!\u00a0Whether they know it or not, our\u00a0big\u00a0kids\u00a0will\u00a0still continue\u00a0to need a sprinkling of our wisdom and experience for years to come.\u00a0And even though they may have fled the nest, remember you will always be one of their most influential role models. So, make sure your digital life is in good shape too because as American novelist James Baldwin shares: \u2018Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
