As consumers, we expect the companies we deal with online to manage and safeguard our data to a super professional level however we also have a role to play here too. So, this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oaic.gov.au\/engage-with-us\/privacy-awareness-week\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Privacy Awareness Week<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> (PAW), let\u2019s focus on what we can do to ensure our personal information is kept as secure, and private as possible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Privacy Awareness Week<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There\u2019s nothing like a dedicated \u2018week\u2019 to renew our focus and in my opinion, this year\u2019s PAW does just that. This year\u2019s theme is &#8211; <\/span><b><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Foundation of Trust \u2013 we all have a role to play<\/span><\/i><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, a great reminder of how it\u2019s up to all of us to ensure we manage online privacy. There\u2019s no doubt that managing our privacy is low on the to-do list for many. And I get it \u2013 we\u2019re all strapped for time, and we don\u2019t ever think privacy breaches will affect us. Well, my friends, I\u2019m here to tell you that privacy breaches do happen. Identity theft is a reality of living life online. In fact, in 2020\/21, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/people\/crime-and-justice\/personal-fraud\/latest-release#:~:text=An%20estimated%200.8%25%20of%20Australians,2014%2D15%20(0.7%25).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">nearly 155,000 Aussies had their identities stolen<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and they were the cases that were reported. But the good news is that if you take a proactive approach, you can minimise the risk of this ever happening.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What You Can Do to Protect Your Online Privacy<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Believe it or not, most of your privacy action plan involves small steps that are, I promise, relatively painless. The most important thing here is that you need to commit to doing them. The last thing you want is to spend months dealing with the fallout from having your identity stolen. It\u2019s exhausting, stressful, and absolutely worth avoiding.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Without further ado, here\u2019s your action plan:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1. Passwords<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strong and complex passwords are essential to keeping your online information tight. Ideally, a password should have between 8-10 characters and be a combination of letters \u2013 both lower and uppercase, numbers and symbols. Each online account should also have its own password too \u2013 which is a very overwhelming concept! Consider using a password manager such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.truekey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">McAfee\u2019s TrueKey<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to help generate and manage passwords.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2. This will mean that only their chosen friends can see their private information. Each social media platform will have its own \u2018help\u2019 page which provides specific steps on how to do this.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559685&quot;:720,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">3. Use Public Wi-Fi With Caution<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you are serious about your online privacy, then you need to use public Wi-Fi sparingly. Unsecured public Wi-Fi is a very risky business. Anything you share could easily find its way into the hands of cybercriminals. So, avoid sharing any sensitive or personal information while using public Wi-Fi. If you travel regularly, consider investing in a VPN. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Virtual_private_network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">A VPN (Virtual Private Network)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> encrypts your activity which means your login details and other sensitive information is protected. Turn on <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Two_factor_authentication\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">two-factor authentication<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> for Google, Dropbox, Facebook and whatever other site offers it. For those new to this option, this means that in addition to your password, you will need to provide another form of identification to ensure you are who you say you are. And there are loads of more \u2018privacy focussed\u2019 options to choose from.
