Edge browser on Windows.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-161629\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/chrome-v-edge.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"491\" appear as toaster pop-ups in the tray above the system clock and are meant to trick users into taking various actions, such as installing software, purchasing a subscription, or providing personal information.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161671\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161671\" style=\"width: 390px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-161671\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/example-of-a-deceptive-push-notification.png\" alt=\"example of a deceptive push id=\"caption-attachment-161671\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">example of a deceptive push notification<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Two Notable Improvements<\/h2>\n<p>Upon further investigation, this major drop seems to be associated with a change in the behavior of the Edge browser with two notable improvements over older versions.<\/p>\n<p>First, when users visit websites known to deliver deceptive push notifications, Edge blocks authorization prompts that could trick users into opting-in to receive popups:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-161657\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pop-ups.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"624\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pop-ups.png 624w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pop-ups-300x87.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pop-ups-205x59.png 205w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Second, when unwanted popups do occur, it is now easier than ever to disable them, on a per-site basis.\u00a0 Users can simply click the three dots (\u2026) on the right of the notification and choose to \u201cTurn off all notifications for\u201d the domain responsible for the popup.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-161643\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/msft-edge.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/msft-edge.png 468w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/msft-edge-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/msft-edge-166x129.png 166w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This is a great improvement over the previous experience of having to manually navigate browser settings to achieve the desired result.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, 9TO5Google <a href=\"https:\/\/9to5google.com\/2022\/06\/01\/chrome-block-notifications-disruptive-websites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> a Chrome code change may be indicative of a similar crack down by Google on nefarious popups.<\/p>\n<p>One can hope Google will follow Microsoft\u2019s example to improve browser security and
