Maybe it\u2019s a call about renewing an extended warranty on your car (one you don\u2019t have). Or maybe the robocaller offers up a debt relief service with a shockingly low rate. Calls like these can get annoying real quick. And they can also be scams.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the U.S., unwanted calls rank as the top consumer complaint reported to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Partly because scammers have made good use of spoofing technologies that serve up phony caller ID numbers. As a result, that innocent-looking phone number <\/span>might<\/span> not be innocent at all.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether the voice on the other end of the smartphone is recorded or an actual person, the intent behind the call is likely the same\u2014to scam you out of your personal information,\u202fmoney, or both. Callers\u202fsuch as\u202fthese <\/span>might<\/span> impersonate banks, government agencies, insurance companies, along with any number of other organizations. Anything that gives them an excuse to demand payment, financial information, or ID numbers.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And some of those callers can sound\u202frather\u202fconvincing. Others, well, they\u2019ll just get downright aggressive or threatening.\u202fOne of the most effective tools\u202fthese scam calls use is\u202fa sense of urgency and fear,\u202ftelling you\u202fthat there\u2019s a problem\u202f<\/span>right now<\/span><\/i>\u202fand they need your information\u202f<\/span>immediately<\/span><\/i>\u202fto resolve whatever bogus issue they\u2019ve come up with.\u202fThat right there is a sign you should take\u202fpause\u202fand determine what\u2019s really happening before responding or taking any action.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Avoid and stop robocalls with these tips\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Whatever form\u202fthese unwanted calls\u202ftake, there are things you can do to protect yourself and even keep you from getting them in the first place. These tips will get you started:\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1) Don\u2019t pick up\u2014and if you do, don\u2019t say \u201cyes\u201d\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

This straightforward piece of advice can actually get a little tricky. We mentioned spoofing, and certain forms of it can get rather exact. Sophisticated spoofing can make a call appear to come from someone you know. Yet more run-of-the-mill spoofing will often use a form of \u201cneighbor spoofing.\u201d The scammers will use a local area code or the same prefix of your phone number to make it seem more familiar. In short, you might answer one of these calls by mistake. I<\/span>f<\/span> you do answer, never say \u201cyes.\u201d <\/span>Similarly<\/span> sophisticated scammers will record <\/span>a victim’s<\/span> voice<\/span> for use in other scams. That can include trying to hack into credit card accounts by using the company\u2019s phone tree. Recordings of slightly longer lengths can also lead to voice cloning using AI-driven tools. In fact, <\/span>three seconds of audio is all it takes in some cases to clone a voice with up to 70% accuracy<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

2) Use your phone\u2019s and carrier\u2019s call blocking features\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Apple and Android phones have features you can enable to silence calls from unknown numbers. <\/span>Apple explains call silencing here<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>Android users can silence spam calls<\/span><\/a> as well. Note that these settings might silence calls you otherwise might want to take. Think about when your doctor\u2019s office calls or the shop rings you with word that your car is ready. Cell phone carriers offer blocking and filtering services as well. Carriers often offer this as a basic service by default. Yet if you\u2019re unsure if you\u2019re covered, contact your carrier.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

3) Don\u2019t return calls from unknown numbers\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

So,\u202flet\u2019s say you let an unknown call go through to voicemail. The call\u202fsounds like it\u2019s\u202ffrom a bank or\u202fbusiness\u202fwith news of an urgent matter. If you feel the need to <\/span>confirm<\/span>, get a legitimate customer service number from a statement, bill, or website\u202fof the bank or business in question\u202fso you can verify the situation for yourself.\u202fCalling back the number captured by your phone\u202for left in <\/span>a voicemail<\/span>\u202f<\/span>can<\/span> play right into the hands of a scammer.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

4) Don\u2019t give in to pressure\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

As\u202fyou can see, scammers love to play the role of an imposter and will tell you there\u2019s something wrong with your taxes, your account, or your bank statement.\u202fSome of them can be quite convincing, so if you\u202ffind yourself in\u202fa conversation\u202fwhere you\u202fdon\u2019t feel comfortable with what\u2019s being said or how it\u2019s being said, hang up and follow up\u202fthe bank\u202for business\u202fas called out above. In all, look out for\u202fpressure or\u202fscare tactics and\u202fkeep your info to yourself.\u202f\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

5) Sign up for your national do not call registry\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Several nations provide such a service,\u202feffectively a list that\u202flegitimate businesses and telemarketers will reference before making their calls. While this <\/span>might<\/span> not prevent scammers from ringing you up, it can cut down on unsolicited calls in general. For example, the\u202f<\/span>U.S.<\/span><\/a>,\u202f<\/span>Canada<\/span><\/a>, and the\u202f<\/span>UK<\/span><\/a>\u202feach\u202foffer\u202fdo\u202fnot call registries.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s at risk? Should the app developers get hit with a data breach, that information could end up in the wild. In cases where information is sold to analytics companies, the information might end up with online data brokers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pay particularly close attention to free apps. How are they making their money? There\u2019s a fine chance that data collection and sale might generate their profits. At some expense to your privacy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While blocking 100% of them remains an elusive goal, you can reduce them greatly with the steps mentioned here. Thankfully, businesses, legislators, and regulatory agencies have taken steps to make it tougher for scammers to make their calls. A combination of technology and stiffer penalties has seen to that.
