Scam artists know no bounds\u2014and that also applies to stealing your\u202f<\/span>cryptocurrency.<\/span> Crypto scams are like any other financial scam, except the scammers are after your crypto assets rather than your cash.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Crypto scammers use many tactics in other financial crimes, such as pump-and-dump scams that lure investors to purchase an asset with fake claims about its value or outright attempts to steal digital assets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This time scammers were trying to get an investor to send a digital asset as a form of payment for a fraudulent transaction.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It starts with a Tweet used as bait to lure innocent cryptocurrency investors into purchasing a non-existent token<\/span>,<\/span> related to a reputed company, SpaceX.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The theme used here by scammers is the sale of the official cryptocurrency of SpaceX.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>In the above image we can also see the reach of the tweet is high. (224.4K views)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A <\/span>WHOIS lookup<\/span> on the <\/span>domain<\/span> reveals <\/span>redacted personal information<\/span>. No surprises there <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span>hen we click<\/span> on<\/span> the link<\/span>,<\/span> it takes <\/span>us to a login page and asks for Space<\/span>X<\/span> login credentials<\/span>.<\/span> This <\/span>page was designed <\/span>as a phishing page for <\/span>people <\/span><\/span>who<\/span> have <\/span>real <\/span>S<\/span>paceX <\/span>login <\/span>credentials<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For people who <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span> have <\/span>S<\/span>paceX credentials<\/span>, they can use the signup link. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After we log<\/span> in<\/span>,<\/span> it <\/span>redirects to a landing page <\/span>where one can <\/span>purchase<\/span> the <\/span>supposedly original<\/span> cryptocurrency launched by SpaceX<\/span><\/p>\n

As you can see, it impersonates as the official SpaceX portal for buying their token. It also has all the elements related to SpaceX and its branding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>the a<\/span>bove pic<\/span>ture, we can see that scammers are employing the social engineering trick of FOMO<\/span><\/span> (Fear <\/span>Of<\/span> Missing <\/span>Out<\/span>) as they have created a timer sh<\/span><\/span>owing<\/span> that the fake tokens are only available for purchase <\/span>for <\/span>the <\/span>next 10 hours. <\/span>This also makes sure that the <\/span>scam<\/span> would end before all the <\/span>online security <\/span>vendors flag the site.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scammers a<\/span>lso allow users to <\/span>purchase<\/span> fake tokens from <\/span>about 22<\/span> cryptocurrencies,<\/span> the prominent<\/span> being Bitcoin, <\/span>Ethereum<\/span>,<\/span> and USD<\/span>T<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Scammers <\/span>even offer<\/span> a <\/span>bonus <\/span>of fake <\/span>SpaceX<\/span> token<\/span>s<\/span> if users are ready to <\/span>purchase<\/span> a minimum amount<\/span><\/p>\n

Here we can find the BTC wallet address of the scammers and see the transactions related to these wallets.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Looking at transactions related to these addresses, we find people have become victims of this scam by sending payments to these wallets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Bitcoin wallet above has gathered around 2<\/span>,<\/span>780 US<\/span> dollars. You can also see three of the last transactions made to the account.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Similarly<\/span>,<\/span> for Ethereum<\/span>,<\/span> the scammers have gathered around 1<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span>45<\/span>0 US dollars<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    We observed two popular cryptocurrencies, but scammers are using about 22 different crypto wallets.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Crypto phishing scams constantly evolve, and new tactics emerge regularly. Users should take the initiative to educate themselves about the latest phishing techniques and scams targeting the cryptocurrency community. Also, stay informed by researching and reading about recent phishing incidents and security best practices.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
