Why the cold feet? The buyer wanted to speak to Michel on the phone to confirm that Michel was a real person. \u201cAre you <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">OK<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> if I voice call you from Google?\u201d Michel agreed, sent her number, and soon received a text with a Google Voice code. The buyer asked for the code, and as soon as Michel sent it, she got that sinking feeling. \u201cI should have Googled before I did, because something feels really off.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As she found out, it was. The scammer ghosted the conversation and ran off with the verification code.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This is a variation of the \u201cVerification Code Scam,\u201d where scammers ask you to send them that six-digit code you receive as part of an account login process. Here, scammers send a text message with a Google Voice verification code and ask you to send them that code. With it, they can create a Google Voice number linked to your phone number\u2014and go on to commit other forms of identity theft in your name.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It happens so often that the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/consumer.ftc.gov\/consumer-alerts\/2021\/10\/google-voice-scam-how-verification-code-scam-works-and-how-avoid-it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a page dedicated to the topic<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Luckily, Michel got wise quickly enough. Also, try a reverse-image search of the person\u2019s profile picture.
