As a mum of 4, I can attest that understanding teenage slang can be quite the feat – as soon as you finally understand a few terms, there\u2019s more! And while you don\u2019t want to seem too intrusive (or uncool) and constantly ask your kids to translate, you probably want to keep a handle on what\u2019s going on \u2013 in case you need to get involved!!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Where Does Slang Come From and Why Do We Use It?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Nothing ever stays the same and that includes language. Slang happens when we shorten words. Think fab instead of fabulous; or when we combine words think chill and relax = chillax. It can also \u2018evolve\u2019 when we give words new, unexpected meanings eg cheugy \u2013 a term to often describe older generations when they make an effort but fail \u2013 harsh!!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And more often than not, words that end up becoming slang will become part of our everyday language. Did you know that the word \u2018mad\u2019 was in fact a slang word for angry that became popular around 100 years ago?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Brewster, senior editor at Merriam Webster Dictionary<\/span><\/a> believes that \u2018slang can be used to have a special form of communication with a subset of people.\u2019 And \u2018by using words that are only understood by the small group of people there\u2019s an intimacy that can develop.\u2019 So, really it\u2019s a type of bonding tool!!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Slang Do You Need To Know Now<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

While slang can sometimes be geographic based, the rise of platforms like TikTok have meant that its far more universal than it was in pre-social media days. So, if you\u2019re keen to know the top words your kids are using so you ensure all is well, then here\u2019s your go-to guide with the top 20 slang words. Apologies in advance for the potentially lewd references!!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Addy<\/strong> \u2013 address<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018Can you send me your addy? I\u2019ll be there soon.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

2. <\/span>Based<\/strong> – when you agree with something; or when you want to recognize someone for being themselves
\n‘You’re going to that party? Based.’<\/span><\/p>\n

3. Ate that<\/strong> \u2013 to successfully achieve something<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018I love that dress. You totally ate that look\u2019 (the dress looked great on you)<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a04. <\/span>Basic<\/strong> \u2013 average<\/span>
\n<\/span>A word to describe someone who is predictable or bland. It\u2019s an insult.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a05. <\/span>Cappin<\/strong> \u2013 lying<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018He\u2019s so cappin\u2019 (he is so not telling the truth)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a06. <\/span>Cheugy<\/strong> \u2013 basic, out of date or trying too hard<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018My older brother still wears his uggs, that\u2019s so cheugy!\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a07. <\/span>Cozzie Livs<\/strong> \u2013 the cost of living crises<\/span>
\n<\/span>An Australian slang expression that was nominated as <\/span>Macquarie Dictionary\u2019s word of the year in 2023<\/span><\/a>.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018I can’t go out tonight. Especially with the cozzie livs and all that jazz.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>8. <\/span>Ded<\/strong> \u2013 so funny or embarrassing!<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018OMG. That pic has me ded\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a09. <\/span>Delulu<\/strong> \u2013 a short-hand term for delusional. It\u2019s often used to describe someone in a humorous way who chooses to reject reality in favour of a more interesting interpretation of events.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018She’s so delulu. She thinks she’s going to marry the lead actor in her favourite movie.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

10. Gas Up<\/strong> \u2013 to encourage or hype someone up. <\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018My sister was feeling down so I gassed her up and reminded her just how great she is.\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a011. <\/span>Low key<\/strong> \u2013 The opposite of high key, it can mean slightly, occasionally, or even secretly.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018I low key want a Poke bowl right now!\u2019\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a012. <\/span>High key<\/strong> \u2013 the opposite of \u2018low key\u2019. The term is used to when you really like something like something or want to emphasise it.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018I high key love that brand\u2019 (you\u2019re a fan!)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

13. IFKKYK<\/strong> \u2013 if you know you know. <\/span>
\n<\/span>It means if you weren\u2019t there, you wouldn\u2019t know. It could also refer to an inside joke.<\/span>
\n<\/span>‘Last night\u2019s concert was amazing! IFKKYK’<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a014. <\/span>No Cap<\/strong> \u2013 a term to emphasise that you\u2019re not lying. A modern way of saying \u2018I swear\u2019<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018I saw him take the last biscuit. No cap\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

15. Pop Off<\/strong> \u2013 when someone is doing well \u2013 often used in gaming.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018Look at Ninja (streamer). He\u2019s popping off on Fortnight\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

16. Rizz<\/strong> \u2013 charisma. It can also describe one\u2019s ability to attract a partner.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018She\u2019s got rizz!\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>17. <\/span>Roman Empire<\/strong> \u2013 something you love and think about all the time.\u00a0<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018Visiting Paris is my Roman Empire\u2019 or \u2018America Ferrera\u2019s Barbie monologue is my Roman Empire.\u2019\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

18. Salty<\/strong> \u2013 annoyed or upset.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018I don\u2019t know why he is so salty\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

19. Simp<\/strong> \u2013 someone who tries too hard or goes above and beyond to impress the person they like.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018He got her a ring after four dates. He\u2019s such a simp!\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

20. Slay<\/strong> \u2013 to do something exceedingly well. <\/span>
\n<\/span>\u2018He slayed that performance\u2019.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So, next time your teen drops a phrase or acronym they think you can\u2019t decipher, you will have NP (no problem) understanding what\u2019s happening in your kids\u2019 lives and absolutely no FOMO (fear of missing out)!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
