{"id":223107,"date":"2025-10-20T15:13:18","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T22:13:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/?p=223107"},"modified":"2025-10-20T15:17:11","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T22:17:11","slug":"aws-outage-disrupts-major-apps-like-reddit-and-snapchat-what-happened-and-how-to-stay-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/security-news\/aws-outage-disrupts-major-apps-like-reddit-and-snapchat-what-happened-and-how-to-stay-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"AWS Outage Disrupts Major Apps Like Reddit and Snapchat\u2014What Happened and How to Stay Safe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Amazon Web Services (AWS)<\/strong>, one of the world\u2019s largest cloud providers, recently experienced a major outage that disrupted popular websites and apps across the globe\u2014including <strong>Snapchat, Reddit, Fortnite, Ring,<\/strong> and <strong>Coinbase<\/strong>, according to reports from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/live-news\/amazon-tech-outage-10-20-25-intl\">CNN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2025\/10\/20\/amazon-web-services-outage-takes-down-major-websites.html\">CNBC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption began out of Northern Virginia, where many of the internet\u2019s most-used applications are hosted.<\/p>\n<p>AWS said the problem originated within its EC2 internal network, impacting more than 70 of its own services, and was tied to DNS issues, the system that tells browsers how to find the right servers online.<\/p>\n<p>A few hours after the initial reports of outages, AWS said the problem had been <em>\u201cfully mitigated,\u201d<\/em> though it took several more hours for all users to see their systems stabilized, according to CNBC.<\/p>\n<p>There is <strong>no indication the outage was caused by a cyberattack<\/strong>, and Amazon continues to investigate the root cause.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why So Many Apps Went Down<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When Amazon Web Services falters, the ripple effects reach far beyond businesses. Millions of consumers suddenly lose access to everyday apps and tools, including everything from banking and airline systems to gaming platforms and smart home devices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the past, companies ran their own servers\u2014if one failed, only that company\u2019s customers felt it,\u201d said <strong>Steve Grobman, McAfee\u2019s Chief Technology Officer<\/strong>. \u201cToday, much of the internet runs on shared backends like Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud. That interconnectedness makes the web faster and more efficient, but it also means one glitch can impact dozens of services at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grobman noted the issue was related to a capability called DNS within AWS, he described DNS as providing the directions on how systems find each other and even if those systems are operational, it can be detrimental.. It&#8217;s analogous to \u00a0<strong>\u201ctearing up a map or turning off your GPS before driving to the store.\u201d<\/strong> The store might still be open and stocked, he explained, but if you can\u2019t find your way there, it doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven with rigorous safeguards in place, events like this remind us just how complex and intertwined our digital world has become,\u201d Grobman added. &#8220;It highlights why resilience and layered protection matter more than ever.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Outages Create Confusion\u2014And Opportunity for Scammers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Events like this sow uncertainty for consumers. When apps fail to load, people may wonder: <em>Is my account hacked? Is my data at risk? Is it just me?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cybercriminals exploit that confusion. After past outages, McAfee researchers have seen <strong>phishing campaigns<\/strong>, <strong>fake refund emails<\/strong>, and <strong>malicious links promising \u201cfixes\u201d or \u201cstatus updates\u201d<\/strong> appear within hours.<\/p>\n<p>Scammers often mimic legitimate service alerts\u2014complete with logos and urgent wording\u2014to trick users into entering passwords or payment information. Others push fake customer-support numbers or send direct messages claiming to \u201crestore access.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How to Protect Yourself During a Major Outage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here\u2019s how to stay secure when the :<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Pause before you click.<\/strong> Be skeptical of any unsolicited message about outages, refunds, or account verification.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go straight to the source.<\/strong> Check the official app or website status pages\u2014don\u2019t follow links in emails or texts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ignore urgent \u201cfix\u201d offers.<\/strong> Legitimate companies won\u2019t ask you to download tools or send payment to restore access.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch for red flags.<\/strong> Requests for money via gift cards, crypto, or wire transfers are almost always scams.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you clicked a suspicious link:<\/strong>\n<ol>\n<li>Change your password immediately (and for any accounts using the same one).<\/li>\n<li>Turn on or refresh <strong>two-factor authentication (2FA)<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Monitor recent transactions and set up alerts.<\/li>\n<li>Run a trusted security scan to remove any unwanted apps or remote-access tools.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>How McAfee Can Help<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Using advanced artificial intelligence, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/en-us\/scam-detector\/\"><strong>McAfee\u2019s Scam Detector<\/strong><\/a> automatically detects scams across text, email, and video, blocks dangerous links, and identifies deepfakes, stopping harm before it happens.<\/p>\n<p>McAfee\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/en-us\/identity-theft\/protection.html\"><strong>identity protection tools<\/strong><\/a> also monitor for signs that your personal information may have been exposed and guide you through steps to recover quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Sign in to your McAfee account to scan for recent breaches linked to your email.
