And he told us his story for one reason: \u201cScammers will target anyone.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It began with a phone call from someone claiming to be the IRS. They said John had underpaid his taxes and needed to resolve it quickly. The caller sounded polished and convincing, so convincing that John\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0stop\u00a0to question\u00a0it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI thought maybe they sent back too much money [in my refund], and they needed it back,\u201d he said. \u201cI was just so busy and overwhelmed that I never really stopped to think about the situation.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">A follow-up email arrived with IRS logos, clean formatting, and a big payment button. John was trying to move fast\u00a0between classes as he\u00a0finished up\u00a0his PhD, and he wanted to\u00a0correct\u00a0the situation as quickly as possible.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cI was like, let me just hurry up and do this, get it over with.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He clicked. He paid.\u00a0But later, when he checked his statement, he\u00a0saw the charge\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0look like an IRS payment at all. In fact,\u00a0it was an international charge.\u00a0<strong>The whole thing was a\u00a0scam.<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">John said the scammer on the phone had\u00a0appealed to his emotions\u00a0and been incredibly convincing.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIt was absolutely masterful,\u201d\u00a0John said. \u201cI would give him an Oscar for it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And\u00a0new McAfee research shows John\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0alone, with\u00a0nearly\u00a01\u00a0in 4 (23%)\u00a0US adults surveyed revealing\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0lost money to a tax\u00a0scam.\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span For example, if an AI tool were compromised in a data breach, user messages with\u00a0personal tax information (like social security numbers, home address, and more) could be made public.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Tax Scams Now Hit Year-Round, McAfee Labs Finds<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In addition to our consumer survey findings, McAfee Labs analyzed malicious URLs, apps, texts, and emails in the months leading up to filing season.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The major takeaway:\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tax\u00a0scams\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0wait for April.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scam\u00a0activity began climbing as early as November and has\u00a0again\u00a0continued building steadily into 2026.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Between September 1,\u00a02025,\u00a0and February 19, 2026, McAfee Labs\u00a0identified\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">1,468 malicious or suspicious tax-themed\u00a0unique\u00a0domains,<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0an average of\u00a0<\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">43 new fake tax websites every\u00a0day.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;335559738&quot;:240,&quot;335559739&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In early November 2025 alone, the average number of new tax-themed malicious domains nearly doubled in just over a week. After a brief dip in late December, activity resumed climbing into February,\u00a0a pattern we expect to intensify as the April filing deadline approaches.<\/span><span
