Rather, catfishing is a new digital sport that\u2019s taking place online. The Urban Dictionary defines a \u201ccatfish\u201d as \u201csomeone who pretends to be someone they\u2019re not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to pursue deceptive online romances.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/catfished-200x300.png\" alt=\"catfished\" width=\"136\" height=\"192\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Getting \u201ccatfished\u201d means you\u2019ve been duped into believing someone you\u2019ve met on the Internet is a real person\u2014even though they are completely fabricated by someone else. Catfishing is not cool if you are doing and it certainly isn\u2019t fun if you are the one being lured, or \u201ccatfished\u201d into a fictitious relationship.\u00a0Catfishing scams also includes people faking cancer or other illnesses to raise funds online as well as predators who capture the emotions of underaged children online<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The new digital sport surfaced more publicaly in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/business.time.com\/2013\/01\/22\/can-you-go-to-jail-for-impersonating-someone-online\/\">the case of Manti Te\u2019o<\/a>, star linebacker for Notre Dame. Manti Te\u2019o was involved in a heartbreaking relationship with a young woman who lost her battle with leukemia . . . the only catch was that the girl he loved didn\u2019t\u00a0actually exist.\u00a0Te\u2019o says he had a very deep emotional connection with his girlfriend through emailing, Facebooking, and texts. A zealous male fan that has since apologized for tricking Te\u2019o into the online relationship.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>While you can\u2019t be online 24\/7 with your kids, here\u2019s what you can do:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Talk about stories in the news.<\/strong> Bring news headlines home for your kids. Talk about the emotional consequences of \u201ccatfishing\u201d that can easily get out of control. There have been several catfishing stories that have ended in tragedy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Develop their digital street smarts.<\/strong> Teach your kids to be savvy to the scams and cheats online. Be real about the half-truths people may claim online. Anonymity breeds deception\u2014and the Internet is rampant with abuse of gullible people looking for love or friendship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Monitor, monitor, monitor.<\/strong> By installing parental monitoring software you can track your child\u2019s online interactions and spot troubling conversations early.
