McAfee explained the vulnerability and defense against future malware exploiting it in a <a title=\"What Master Key? \u2013 Android Signature Bypass Vulnerability\" href=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/consumer\/what-master-key-android-signature-bypass-vulnerability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Android Application Master Key Vulnerability<\/h2>\n<p>Last week the first malware that exploit the Master Key vulnerability were found in an Android application market in China. The app used the vulnerability to hide the malicious classes.dex from Android\u2019s package signature verification.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27836\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/exploit-masterkey-1.png\" alt=\"exploit-masterkey-1\" width=\"487\" height=\"401\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/exploit-masterkey-1.png 487w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/exploit-masterkey-1-300x247.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This vulnerability allows an attacker to inject malicious code by putting duplicate executable files&#8211;such as classes.dex&#8211;in an application package. The package verification step at installation is done against the original, legitimate file, but at runtime the second, malicious file takes over. The attacker&#8217;s malicious code in the second classes.dex collects and sends the device\u2019s sensitive information to remote servers and also sends SMS messages to those who are in the victim&#8217;s contact list. A second AndroidManifest.xml file, corresponding to the second classes.dex, replaces the legitimate .xml so that additional permission declarations are injected along with several broadcast receivers and services registrations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27837\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/exploit-masterkey-2.png\" alt=\"exploit-masterkey-2\" width=\"508\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/exploit-masterkey-2.png 508w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/exploit-masterkey-2-300x121.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 508px) 100vw, 508px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The only good news might be that at installation users can see the list of requested permissions that are declared in the second AndroidManifest.xml; so they might at least notice the excessive permission requests.<\/p>\n<p>McAfee provided its solution, via <a title=\"McAfee Mobile Security\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mcafeemobilesecurity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McAfee Mobile Security<\/a>, to this threat before the first malware appeared in the wild, proactively detecting and blocking this threat as Exploit\/MasterKey.A.
