Typically arguments that are pointer variables belonging to the stack must be greater than the extended stack pointer (ESP, in the already allocated region of the stack). After setting the stack pivot, the exploit makes the call to ZwProtectVirtualMemory as shown in this screen:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/mcafee-labs\/recent-ie-0-day-unusual-case-study\/attachment\/20140226-zwcall_ex\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-33503\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-33503\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20140226-ZwCall_Ex.png\" alt=\"20140226 ZwCall_Ex\" width=\"1559\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/20140226-ZwCall_Ex.png 1559w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/20140226-ZwCall_Ex-300x109.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/20140226-ZwCall_Ex-1024x373.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1559px) 100vw, 1559px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>NTSYSAPI NTSTATUS NTAPI ZwProtectVirtualMemory (_In_ HANDLE \u00a0 ProcessHandle,<\/p>\n<p>_In_ PVOID * \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 BaseAddress,<\/p>\n<p>_In_ SIZE_T * \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NumberOfBytesToProtect,<\/p>\n<p>_In_ ULONG \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 NewAccessProtection,<\/p>\n<p>_Out_ PULONG\u00a0\u00a0 OldAccessProtection<\/p>\n<p>)<\/p>\n<p>The third parameter is a pointer variable on the stack, but this one lies in a yet to be allocated region of the stack. Typically the pointer should be greater than ESP, but in this case it is smaller.<\/p>\n<p>Kernel calls don\u2019t use the stack much; they are just a wrapper around the kernel, which has a different stack altogether. In the absence of a hook at ZwProtectVirtualMemory (for hook-based detection systems), this call will work smoothly like a normal call; but in the case of any hooks, this parameter has a tendency to get corrupted by allocated local variables of hooks and result in the failure of the API call, which will most likely result in the failure of the exploit&#8211;an unusual evasion by failure in the presence of a hook-based detection system.<\/p>\n<p>We have also seen similar exploitation scenarios in the CVE-2013-3918 zero-day attack.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While
