Me \u2013 thousands!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Teaching our kids manners and safety is something many parents just do automatically. We provide the hot tips as we go about our daily lives. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>But how many of us extend our advice to cyber issues?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Recent research by McAfee entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/consumer\/family-safety\/latest-teens-tweens-and-technology-research-shows-parents-need-a-pat-on-the-back-but-there-is-still-work-to-be-done\/\">Tweens, Teens and Technology<\/a> highlighted that our kids are embracing technology with great gusto. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Not only are our tweens (8-12 year olds) using between 3-4 internet enabled devices and spending 1.5 hours per day online but 67% of them are using a social media website such as Skype, Facebook, Club Penguin and Instagram.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Being a good cyber citizen and smart operator online is absolutely critical in our digital age. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>So instilling online safety messages into our children should be one of our biggest priorities as parents in the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Online Etiqutte Rules<\/h2>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Here are my top 5 online etiquette rules that will help your child become a good cyber citizen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">1. Treat others online as you would like to be treated.<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-AU\"> If you or your kids are ever in doubt about how to handle an online situation \u2013 always revert back to this rule. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>The right course of action will become crystal clear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">2. Double check before you hit \u2018send\u2019. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-AU\">Play attention to typos, grammar and most importantly tone \u2013 these all help to create an impression of you online aka your <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cybersmart.gov.au\/teens\/how%20do%20I%20deal%20with\/digital%20reputation.aspx\">digital reputation<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">3. Don\u2019t say something online that you wouldn\u2019t say to someone\u2019s face.<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-AU\"> <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>If you have an issue with someone, don\u2019t raise it online. In person is always best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">4. Understand that you will never agree with everyone online.<\/span><\/b><span lang=\"EN-AU\"> <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>There is a polite way of sharing your opinion online without attacking or abusing others. <span style=\"mso-spacerun: yes;\">\u00a0<\/span>Harassing or attacking others online aka <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flaming_(Internet)\">\u2018flaming\u2019<\/a> is not acceptable at all. Not only will you lose online friends but it will damage your online reputation real fast! <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b style=\"mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;\"><span lang=\"EN-AU\">5.
