I have\u00a0a tight reign on my kids\u2014they know better. The chances of an inappropriate photo\u00a0getting circulated, is pretty much zero.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To which I would promptly administer this <strong>two-step reality check<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>The #1 truth<\/strong> in parenting is you never have as much control as you think you have.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>The #2 truth<\/strong> in parenting is never\u2014and I mean never\u2014say (to yourself or out loud) that \u201cthis will never.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>From \u2018Don\u2019t\u2019 to Damage Control <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ve had the talk with your kids, however, if a romantic relationship (or a friendship) goes south, you have zero control over <em>other people&#8217;s kids<\/em> and <em>their<\/em> degree of common sense or ethics when it comes to uploading embarrassing photos of someone else.<\/p>\n<p>The first line of defense is simply to reinforce to your kids to never\u00a0(ever, ever, ever) share risky photos of themselves with <em>anyone<\/em> via any digital channel or <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">allow<\/span> any of photos to be taken of them. However, as we&#8217;ve all witnessed teens (as well as adults) disregard that warning every day.<\/p>\n<p>So assuming you need to do some degree of damage control, where should you even begin to lasso in an embarrassing photo from the boundless byways of the Internet?<\/p>\n<p>You simply move forward one step at a time and clog every leak you can. The bad news is once the photo is out of your hands, you lose all control and can never completely be assured that you\u2019ve stopped the bleeding.<\/p>\n<p>However, you can do damage control. So breathe and let\u2019s get started:<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to remove embarrassing photos online:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Facebook <\/strong>(6 remove options)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ask the friend who uploaded the photo to remove it.<\/li>\n<li>Go to the image. Once you open it click &#8216;Options&#8217; and then either &#8216;Report Photo&#8217; or &#8216;Remove Tag.&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Send an email to\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:info@support.facebook.com\">info@support.facebook.com<\/a>asking for the photo to be removed.<\/li>\n<li>In Facebook\u2019s Help section, file a complaint using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/contact\/208282075858952\">Facebook Intellectual Property Infringement Form<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In Facebook\u2019s Help section, file a complaint using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/contact\/274459462613911\">Facebook Terms Violation Reporting Form<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Facebook does have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/help\/community\">Help Community<\/a> that may be able to offer some suggestions\u2014or at least offer you wisdom (and empathy).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Instagram <\/strong>(3 remove options)<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>To de-tag, select &#8216;Hide from my profile&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Click on &#8216;More options&#8217; and choose &#8216;Remove me from photo&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Report the photo as inappropriate<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Twitter <\/strong>(1 remove option)<\/p>\n<p>In the Twitter Help section you can <a href=\"https:\/\/support.twitter.com\/forms\/abusiveuser\">report abusive behavior of another user, here.<\/a> You will be directed to a series of options that go into impressive detail about your complaint.<\/p>\n<p>If a situation goes to the next level and there is true damage and malice, going to the local authorities is your next step, who will then direct you in filing legal charges.<\/p>\n<p>Recent headlines speak loudly to the rise in and consequences of revenge porn and photo blackmail. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/man-charged-in-running-revenge-porn-site-convicted\/\">a major revenge porn case<\/a>, Kevin Bollaert, 28, recently was found guilty in a San Diego court of identity theft and extortion.
