Last week we talked about the dangers that can arise with\u00a0apps that allow anonymous users<\/a> to interact. Equally concerning is the growing popularity of location tracking apps among teens. Designed to help moms\u00a0keep track of kids, these apps serve a great purpose. However, they can be misused\u00a0by teens looking for\u00a0nearby friends if privacy settings aren’t locked down.<\/p>\n

These\u00a0apps differ from social networks\u2014such as Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook\u2014which also have geo-location features built into them that take a few extra clicks to get to. Location tracking\u00a0apps are designed specifically\u00a0to\u00a0locate users with precision\u2014down to their street address, avatar, and time stamps. Which frankly, is\u00a0pretty frightening if an app is being misused (see photo, above).<\/p>\n

Such apps include: Find My Friends, Glympse, In the Room, Connect, Nearify, My Location, Location Tracker, Locate My Friends, Who\u2019s Here, and the list goes on.\u00a0Several of those icons are to the right.<\/p>\n

What are the dangers of such apps? There\u2019s the obvious danger of personal information instantly becoming public.\u00a0And, when it comes to minors using these apps, it is a potential safety\u00a0issue.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the bigger danger is this: Many teens (digital natives) see nothing inherently wrong with sharing their location at anytime, with anyone.\u00a0Sharing is in their cultural DNA.<\/p>\n

That’s where\u00a0parents need to step in and\u00a0curb their urge to share\u00a0things such as personal info, location, and other details that could put them at risk.<\/p>\n

Discussion points for families:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u2022 Examine how an app is being used.\u00a0<\/strong>If your teen is using a location app,\u00a0ask them to show you how they’re using it and the friends with whom they interact. Make sure that your teen is only communicating with people they know.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Share location with friends only.<\/strong> Location apps for minors are unnecessary outside the context of family. Let your kids know if they’d like\u00a0to share their location with a friend, they can call or send a text. And here’s an idea: If they\u00a0want to know who is nearby, they may want to\u00a0look up from their\u00a0screens<\/em> and scan the room\u2014an app is not needed for that.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Location sharing\u00a0puts a whole family at risk.<\/strong> When location services are turned on within a social network, embedded in photos, or shared through a\u00a0location app, it becomes easier\u00a0for criminals to\u00a0track behaviors. Using these apps can open up your family to theft or personal harm.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Location apps are just creepy.<\/strong> Location apps can encourage cyberbullying, stalking, and predatory behavior. Some of these apps are populated by people\u00a0with ill intentions who are\u00a0looking to engage in sexual conversation with anyone of any age. Teens don\u2019t realize this when they download these apps and innocently set out to find friends nearby and connect for purely social reasons. Kids\u00a0can also be duped by people who look like peers but are not.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Just say NO to giving away personal info.<\/strong>\u00a0Many\u00a0of these apps require first and last names, age, and zip code at registration or that a user log in using a Facebook account. Most apps\u00a0simultaneously ask permission to use location services on a user\u2019s device. This has become the norm but advise your kids to just say NO to that click.\u00a0This is far too much personal information for a minor to be giving out.<\/p>\n

\u2022 Review privacy settings on all social networks.<\/strong> Remind them that\u00a0location information shared through social networks can make everyday photos more visible to people and communities beyond their accepted friend list. Be sure your kids set social networks to private and that location settings are switched to “off.”<\/p>\n

With all the features being built into apps today, chances are many of the apps on your child\u2019s phone have some form of location approval enabled. To disable location services on apps, go into your child\u2019s general settings icon and find Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
