Similar to other ransomware variants, TeslaCrypt propagates through a wide range of spam campaigns and is also downloaded with the help of other malware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>W97M\/Downloader<\/li>\n<li>JS\/Nemucod<\/li>\n<li>Angler exploit kit<\/li>\n<li>Neutrino exploit kit<\/li>\n<li>Generic downloaders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Last week, McAfee observed a novel approach in downloading TeslaCrypt using the\u00a0Neutrino exploit kit.<\/p>\n<p>Like other exploit kits, Neutrino redirects users to a malicious landing page that hosts exploit files targeting various vulnerabilities. The redirector link may arrive via email as part of spam campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Once successful, the exploit kit delivers a Trojan downloader and executes it on the victim\u2019s machine. The payload then starts generating random domain names and contacts a remote server with the following parameters.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-48289 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK1-1-300x68.jpg\" alt=\"NK1\" width=\"520\" height=\"118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK1-1-300x68.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK1-1.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The variable &#8220;_wv=&#8221; is assigned to the Base64 text string &#8220;ZW50ZXI=&#8221; which decodes to the\u00a0command &#8220;enter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The server responds with a 404 error page. The response for the command &#8220;enter&#8221; is present in the comments section of the HTML page, which is again a Base64-encoded (&lt;!&#8212;c3VjY2Vzcw==&#8212;&gt;) text that decodes to the\u00a0response &#8220;success.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-48295 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK2-300x152.jpg\" alt=\"NK2'\" width=\"482\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK2-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK2.jpg 697w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Upon receiving the success message, the malware responds with the same cookie-auth browser agent, along with a reply containing an encoded data.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-48302 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK3-300x112.jpg\" alt=\"NK3\" width=\"597\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK3-300x112.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK3-768x288.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK3.jpg 849w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 597px) 100vw, 597px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The encoded data has the following format:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">cmd&amp;&lt;GUID of Machine &gt;&amp;&lt;Logged-in Username: System Name: Domain Name&gt;&amp;&lt;Windows Version and Platform&gt; &amp;&lt;AV product Info&gt;&amp;&lt;Date and Time of Execution&gt;<\/p>\n<p>The compromised machine receives another 404 error page along with a download link that delivers a TeslaCrypt variant from the remote server.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48305 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK-300x129.jpg\" alt=\"NK$\" width=\"642\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK-768x329.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/NK.jpg 880w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 642px) 100vw, 642px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The decoded comments section has the following format:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;random ldap timestamp&gt;#&lt;&gt;#&lt;&gt;#LOADER hxxp:\/\/103.*****.148\/*****.exe#<\/p>\n<p>After successful execution, TeslaCrypt encrypts files in the victim\u2019s machine and demands money to decrypt them.<\/p>\n<p>We have seen\u00a0the following domain names associated with this malware:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>nutqauytva100azxd.com<\/li>\n<li>nutqauytva11azxd.com<\/li>\n<li>nutqauytva513xyzf11zzzzz0.com<\/li>\n<li>nutr3inomiranda1.com<\/li>\n<li>nutqauytva9azxd.com<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These domains are already flagged by McAfee SiteAdvisor as malicious.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-48393 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/site.jpg\" alt=\"site\" width=\"665\" height=\"420\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/site.jpg 665w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/site-300x189.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 665px) 100vw, 665px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>How to prevent this infection:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In spite of the availability of patches for known vulnerabilities such as CVE-2015-2419, CVE-2015-7645, and others, this exploit kit still targets these weaknesses. McAfee recommends users install the latest patches for Internet Explorer, Adobe Flash, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>We advise all users to be\u00a0extra careful when opening unsolicited emails and clicking unknown links.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>We strongly advise all users to block the preceding domain names.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>McAfee products detect these TeslaCrypt variants as \u201cRansom-Tescrypt!&lt;Partial hash&gt;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This post\u00a0was written by Sriram P. and Varadharajan Krishnasamy.
