{"id":49453,"date":"2016-05-04T09:59:19","date_gmt":"2016-05-04T16:59:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mcafee.com\/?p=49453"},"modified":"2025-08-31T22:29:01","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T05:29:01","slug":"ransomware-costing-consumers-millions-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/internet-security\/ransomware-costing-consumers-millions-year\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Protect Yourself From The Malware That\u2019s Costing Consumers Millions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This blog post was written by Nick Viney.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"9903\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--h3\">You may have heard about the hack of a Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles a couple of months ago, in which the hospital was targeted by cyber criminals who infiltrated and disabled its computer network using ransomware.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-49454 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/maxresdefault-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"cybercrime\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">When hospital employees reported being unable to access the hospital\u2019s network and electronic medical records system, it was forced to pay a ransom of about $17,000 (\u00a312,000). Before then, the hospital was literally locked out of its own computer system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Worryingly, this type of malware attack is on the rise, and shows no signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n<p id=\"59cd\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">And it\u2019s not just affecting companies\u200a\u2014\u200aconsumers too, are being targeted. In 2015, the FBI reported receiving just under 2,500 individual complaints about ransomware attacks, which amounted to a staggering combined loss of more than $24 million for the victims.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"fa07\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">So what is ransomware?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"92df\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Put simply, ransomware is malicious software that cyber criminals use to encrypt a victim\u2019s data, holding a computer, or computer files, for ransom, and demanding payment for the decryption key so that the victim can get their data back.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ca5d\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">How does ransomware get on your computer?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"4201\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\">Ever received a seemingly legitimate email with attachments? Well one of the most common ways hackers trick people into downloading ransomware is through spam emails and email attachments. The emails and attachments seem genuine, but in fact carry viruses that once downloaded, can infiltrate a person\u2019s computer system.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"54fa\" class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">How can you protect yourself from ransomware?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"graf--p graf-after--p\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">While ransomware attacks sound frightening\u200a\u2014\u200aand indeed they can be\u200a\u2014\u200athere are a number of simple steps you can take to protect yourself:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"cfd4\" class=\"graf--li graf-after--p\">First and foremost, it\u2019s important to safeguard yourself against ransomware by regularly backing up your files, either to an external drive that is not connected to your network, or a backup service.<\/li>\n<li id=\"9f3a\" class=\"graf--li graf-after--li\">Be wary of any unsolicited or suspicious looking emails. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/consumer\/spot-phishy-email\/\">Click here<\/a> for McAfee\u2019s guide on how to spot a dodgy email.<\/li>\n<li id=\"9025\" class=\"graf--li graf-after--li\">Use anti-virus software to protect yourself against new exploits that aren\u2019t yet fixed by an update. While anti-virus software is an expense, the cost is far less than what cybercriminals will demand in ransom.<\/li>\n<li id=\"b83b\" class=\"graf--li graf-after--li\">Immediately disconnect from Wi-Fi and your network if you download a file that you suspect may be ransomware. If you\u2019re quick enough, you could delay the communication with the server before it finishes encrypting your files.<\/li>\n<li id=\"76e3\" class=\"graf--li graf-after--li\">If you are targeted with ransomware, avoid paying the ransom.
