{"id":50360,"date":"2016-06-14T07:00:10","date_gmt":"2016-06-14T14:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mcafee.com\/?p=50360"},"modified":"2025-08-15T05:21:58","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T12:21:58","slug":"risky-selfie-trend-snapping-driving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/privacy-identity-protection\/risky-selfie-trend-snapping-driving\/","title":{"rendered":"Risky Selfie Trend: Snapping and Driving"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just when you thought the dangerous selfie craze was winding down,\u00a0there&#8217;s a whole\u00a0new trend that poses a risk to drivers. It&#8217;s called the Miles Per Hour (MPH) Snapchat selfie. The MPH filter is a real-time speedometer lens that Snapchat users can lay over their selfies based on the speed they are traveling at the time (see photo example, below).<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/05\/04\/us\/snapchat-speeding-teenager-crash-lawsuit.html?_r=0\">recent news reports<\/a>, the trend came into the public spotlight when 18-year-old\u00a0Christal McGee allegedly pushed her vehicle speed to 107 mph to get her Snapchat Miles Per Hour filter over 100 mph. Unfortunately, McGee, along with her three passengers wrecked into Uber driver Wentworth Maynard, who suffered a traumatic brain injury.<\/p>\n<p>Maynard has since filed a lawsuit against not only McGee but also Snapchat, alleging that because of the Miles Per Hour (MPH) filter, Snapchat is an &#8220;inherently dangerous app&#8221; that encourages reckless driving. Maynard&#8217;s attorney, Michael Lawson Neff laid out the accident great detail, with photos, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlnlaw.com\/snapchat\/\">a recent blog post.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong>5 family talking points<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Never assume.<\/strong> You might assume your child would never do what McGee did, but that&#8217;s a risky assumption on your part. Kids are kids and even the smartest kids have spikes of silliness, even stupidity. Talk about the risks of the MPH filter with your kids. Put consequences in place for using the filter. If the consequence is that you take their phone, then keep your word, and take the phone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Get a Snapchat account.<\/strong>\u00a0If you know the apps where your kids spend time, you will begin to get a feel for the culture of that app and what they could be doing that is risky. Snapchat recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2016-06-02\/snapchat-passes-twitter-in-daily-usage\">surpassed Twitter<\/a>\u00a0in popularity so if you are hoping your kids will lose interest, think again.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-total-count=\"1501\" data-para-count=\"203\"><strong>Treat it seriously.<\/strong>\u00a0Don&#8217;t let your kids dismiss the seriousness of snapping and driving or texting and driving. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2011, 3,331 people were killed in crashes involving a distracted driver, compared to 3,267 in 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-total-count=\"1501\" data-para-count=\"203\"><strong>Take the pledge.<\/strong> Have each family member take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.itcanwait.com\/all\">\u201cIt Can Wait\u201d<\/a> pledge and share it with your family. Remember, it\u2019s the example\u2014not the words\u2014of parents that kids learn.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-total-count=\"1501\" data-para-count=\"203\"><strong>Prohibit phones in the car.<\/strong> Do your kids want to drive? Require them to put their phones in the trunk.\u00a0That\u2019s right; the #1 defense against distracted driving is to avoid it entirely. If you don\u2019t trust yourself to put your phone away while behind the wheel, put it in your trunk <em>before<\/em> you start your car. If you think that&#8217;s too extreme, study up on <a href=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/consumer\/apps-stop-adults-texting-driving\/\">the many apps<\/a> you can install to block your teens&#8217; (and your!) phone use when driving.
