Which is why it\u2019s worrying when researchers find security flaws in major messaging apps. And that\u2019s exactly what happened recently, when researchers identified a <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2016\/06\/07\/facebook-messenger-bug-allowed-researchers-to-change-conversation-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">troublesome flaw<\/a> in the\u00a0Facebook Messenger application.<\/p>\n<p>The flaw would give a cybercriminal unfettered access to a victim\u2019s chat logs\u2014allowing them to modify, delete and generate fraudulent pictures, links and texts. This flaw could also be used to spread <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/en-us\/antivirus\/malware.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">malware<\/a>, ransomware and more. While the attack is limited\u2014it only affects the Messenger application on Android devices\u2014it could still be troublesome.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put: an attacker could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digitaltrends.com\/computing\/facebook-messenger-vulnerability\/#:WrmFGcgswDoBrQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">modify a message history<\/a> as a part of a fraud campaign \u2014 either stating the victim agreed to do something that they didn\u2019t, or framing the victim for a crime they didn\u2019t commit. Crooks could also use the flaw to spread ransomware, spy on business conversations and more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2016\/06\/07\/facebook-messenger-security-flaw\/#fxzPKXqspGqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Facebook was notified<\/a> of this flaw well before it was announced on June 7, and being the professionals they are, their teams fixed the vulnerability post-haste. So you don\u2019t have to worry about this vulnerability so long as your Facebook Messenger application is updated to the latest version.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, it\u2019s a good reminder to always be conscious and aware of what you do and say online at all times. After all, another vulnerability could be lurking right around the corner.<\/p>\n<h2>Measures You Can Take to Protect Yourself<\/h2>\n<p>So what can you do to make sure you don\u2019t fall victim to this sort of attack in the future? Well, there are a few measures you can take:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t answer messages from strangers.<\/strong> It\u2019s solid advice for all aspects of life, but here it could save you from a long-running spat of identity fraud and malware infections. If someone you don\u2019t know is sending you messages and links\u2014even if they appear friendly\u2014ignore them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Watch where you click<\/strong>. Like a lot of <a href=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/consumer\/phishing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">phishing<\/a> attacks, messaging attacks have tell-tale signs. Bad grammar, off-beat syntax, suspicious behavior and links to well-known, but misspelled URL addresses, are all things to be conscious of when reviewing messages. If something seems off, exit the conversation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Use comprehensive security. <\/strong>A lot of messaging attacks will still need to get past security programs in order to infect a device\u2014that is, if you have one in place.
