Update Your Apple Devices Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This blog was written by Bruce Snell.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A number of serious vulnerabilities <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.talosintel.com\/2016\/07\/apple-image-rce.html\">have been recently reported <\/a>\u00a0impacting OS X, iOS, watchOS and tvOS.\u00a0 These vulnerabilities appear to be similar to <a href=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/consumer\/android-stagefright-vulnerability\/\">StageFright<\/a> in that an attacker can execute malicious code without any user interaction whatsoever.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>I don\u2019t even have to click anything?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The vulnerability involves\u00a0a bug in the way TIFF files are handled.\u00a0 TIFF is an image format like JPG or GIF that is commonly associated with Photoshop or other photo editing software.\u00a0 The malware writer can take advantage of this bug to execute malicious code when the image is viewed.\u00a0 This is particularly dangerous when you think about how often you receive an iMessage containing a picture.\u00a0 The reason you can see the picture is because iMessage automatically opens the file.\u00a0 If the image contained malware, it could execute code that had access to the device\u2019s memory and stored passwords.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Don\u2019t worry, there\u2019s already a fix.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-51447\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4551-300x265.png\" alt=\"IMG_4551\" width=\"300\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4551-300x265.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4551-768x679.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_4551.png 894w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Apple is already on top of this vulnerability and has released fixes for iOS and OS X.\u00a0 The update is already available.\u00a0 To find <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT204204\">this update in iOS<\/a>, tap Settings &gt; General &gt; Software Update.\u00a0 This is a relatively small update and should only take a short amount of time to download.\u00a0 To install the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT201541\">update for OS X<\/a>, open the App Store app on your Mac and click \u201cUpdates\u201d in the toolbar.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>What if I can\u2019t update?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If for some reason you can\u2019t update your iOS device right away, you can minimize your risk by turning off iMessage on your iPhone and disabling MMS messaging.\u00a0 This does mean you will only be able to receive text messages, but you will also not be able to receive infected TIFF files that could exploit your system.<\/p>\n<p>Bugs like this don\u2019t come around every day, but thankfully Apple\u2019s quick response could help minimize the risk of this one.<\/p>\n<p>Stay on top of the latest consumer and mobile security threats by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brucesnell\">following me<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McAfee\">@McAfee<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter, and \u2018Like\u2019 us on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/McAfee\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stay safe!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This blog was written by Bruce Snell.
