In this post, we will learn how to add SSL support and force the App Engine application to use only SSL.<\/p>\n<p>Start by obtaining an SSL certificate for your domain from an authorized certificate authority. Consider following elements while buying the certificate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The name of the certificate should match the domain name. The certificate can be a <a href=\"https:\/\/casecurity.org\/2014\/02\/26\/pros-and-cons-of-single-domain-multi-domain-and-wildcard-certificates\/\">single domain or multidomain but should not be a wildcard certificate<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The certificate should be signed using a strong signing algorithm such as SHA-256.<\/li>\n<li>For financial and other sensitive applications, it is best to have an extended validation for the certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Before adding SSL support, make sure you have added a custom domain name for your application. If not already done so, you can <a href=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/mcafee-labs\/creating-custom-domain-name-google-app-engine-application\/\">refer to this blog<\/a> and follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Log in to the <a href=\"https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/\">Google Cloud Platform Console<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate to \u201cApp Engine\u201d and \u201cSettings\u201d as shown in the following screenshot or enter <a href=\"https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/appengine\/settings\/certificates\">https:\/\/console.cloud.google.com\/appengine\/settings\/certificates<\/a> in the address bar. Click on the \u201cSSL Certificates\u201d tab and then on \u201cUpload a new certificate.\u201d \u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-51814 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160804-SSL-1.png\" alt=\"20160804 SSL 1\" width=\"786\" height=\"643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160804-SSL-1.png 786w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160804-SSL-1-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160804-SSL-1-768x628.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 786px) 100vw, 786px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the certificate and the domain to which the certificate needs to be attached.<\/li>\n<li>Confirm changes by accessing your application over HTTPS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Regardless of whether you use a custom domain for your application; it is important to note that by default HTTPS is not strictly enforced for App Engine applications. This means your web application will be available over plain HTTP and HTTPS. HTTP is a clear-text protocol, and sensitive information is sent unencrypted over the network; that is not safe. Now let\u2019s see how we can enforce HTTPS for the applications developed using App Engine:<\/p>\n<p>Add these two lines in the file app.yaml in the folder WEB-INF:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">url: .*<br \/>\nsecure: always<\/p>\n<p>For Java applications, we can achieve the same effect through the file web.xml:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">&lt;web-app&gt;<br \/>\n\u2026\u2026\u2026<br \/>\n&lt;!&#8211; Enforcing HTTPS &#8211;&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;security-constraint&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;web-resource-collection&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;web-resource-name&gt;HTTPS&lt;\/web-resource-name&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;url-pattern&gt;\/*&lt;\/url-pattern&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;\/web-resource-collection&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;user-data-constraint&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;transport-guarantee&gt;CONFIDENTIAL&lt;\/transport-guarantee&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;\/user-data-constraint&gt;<br \/>\n&lt;\/security-constraint&gt;<br \/>\n\u2026\u2026\u2026<br \/>\n&lt;\/web-app&gt;<\/p>\n<p><strong>HTTP Strict Transport Security<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The preceding method of enforcing HTTPS works via redirection. If a user issues a request over HTTP, it will be redirected to HTTPS. The problem with this initial HTTP request is that it is vulnerable to a man-in-the-middle attack, allowing an attacker to redirect the user to a malicious page. For example, a user connects to an open Wi-Fi service at an airport or caf\u00e9 and requests web application over HTTP. Because this Wi-Fi is controlled by the attacker, the user is redirected to a malicious page instead of the real web application. To protect users from such scenarios, a web application can make use of the HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) header.
