{"id":53098,"date":"2016-10-05T17:06:21","date_gmt":"2016-10-06T00:06:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.mcafee.com\/?p=53098"},"modified":"2025-08-15T02:53:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-15T09:53:07","slug":"how-do-i-live-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/family-safety\/how-do-i-live-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"How Do I Live Safe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This blog was written by Bruce Snell.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>You may have seen <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HowILiveSafe?src=hash\">#HowILiveSafe<\/a> floating around on Twitter.\u00a0 We thought it would be a great way to share some tips from the McAfee family about what we, as security professionals, do to stay safe online. \u00a0Instead of flooding Twitter with my contributions to this effort, I\u2019m writing a longer form post so I can go into a more detail.\u00a0 I don\u2019t want to go on for too long, so I thought I\u2019d narrow it down to one of the top 3 things you can do to live safe online: updating everything.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Why Update?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Why do I obsess over updates?\u00a0 One word: bugs.\u00a0 No, I don\u2019t have entomophobia.\u00a0 I\u2019m talking about software bugs.\u00a0 Bugs (error in software code) might make your application crash or behave strangely, but they are also taken advantage of by malware writers to infect your device.\u00a0 Think of a bug as broken board in a fence.\u00a0 My next door neighbor\u2019s dog \u201cMax\u201d found a loose board in the fence between our yards and literally nosed around until he found a way to push the board aside and get through.\u00a0 This is what malware writers do.\u00a0 They find loose boards (bugs) and mess around until they find a way (malware) to get through.\u00a0 Now typically, malware is stopped by security software.\u00a0 To expand our analogy, think of security software as me standing in my back yard telling Max he can\u2019t come in.\u00a0 It\u2019s very effective, but wouldn\u2019t you rather just repair the fence and not have to sit around in the middle of the night telling Max to stay on his side of the fence?\u00a0 Patching and updating are like repairing the fence.\u00a0 It\u2019s a great way to stop malware from even having a place to take hold and will go a long way in keeping you protected.\u00a0 Also, for some devices like smart TVs, iOS devices and others that can\u2019t run security software, it\u2019s the only way to keep the malware out.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>So Update Already!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I\u2019m only partially joking when I say I obsessively update my apps and devices.\u00a0 My work laptop is configured by our IT department to automatically update and patch, so I don\u2019t even have to think about it.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-53099\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016-10-05_13-47-46.jpg\" alt=\"2016-10-05_13-47-46\" width=\"206\" height=\"28\" \/>However, all the systems in my house have automatic updating turned on.<br \/>\nIn Windows 10, it\u2019s pretty straight forward: just hit the Windows key and start typing \u201cAutomatic updates\u201d and you will soon see \u201cWindows Update settings.\u201d Click on that and enable automatic updates.\u00a0 So that takes care of Windows 10, but what about all the apps I have installed?<\/p>\n<p>Most applications have the \u201cCheck for updates\u201d option somewhere in the settings menu.\u00a0 When you enable this, it typically means the app will check for an update every time you open it up.\u00a0 This is usually a pretty good option, but what about for those apps that you don\u2019t use regularly?\u00a0 An unpatched app is still dangerous when it\u2019s not running.\u00a0 For an additional safety net, I use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/consumer\/en-us\/store\/m0\/catalog\/mls_430\/mcafee-livesafe.html\">McAfee LiveSafe<\/a> which has a \u201cvulnerability scanner\u201d that checks for the latest updates for my installed applications. I have this scheduled to run every Friday at 5 AM.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-53102\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3960-300x237.png\" alt=\"img_3960\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3960-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3960-768x606.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3960-1024x808.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_3960.png 1242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>For smartphones and tablets, we\u2019re an iOS house.\u00a0\u00a0 I make sure to enable automatic updates for my iPhone and iPad by going to Settings &gt; iTunes &amp; App Store and making sure \u201cUpdates\u201d is selected.\u00a0 Doing this insures new updates will download and install when available and I don\u2019t have to worry about it.\u00a0 You may want to uncheck \u201cUse Cellular Data\u201d because the updates could eat away at your data plan.<\/p>\n<p>iOS will typically let you know when a system update is available.\u00a0 However, the notification may not be immediate.\u00a0 When you hear there is a new version of iOS available, go to Settings &gt; General &gt; Software Update to see if there is a new update available.\u00a0 If there is, make sure your system has been backed up recently and get to updating.<\/p>\n<p>Android has so many different implementations and builds, that my best guidance is sharing some general direction on where to look for turning on auto-updates.\u00a0 <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-53104\" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot_20160302-162323-576x1024-241x300.png\" alt=\"screenshot_20160302-162323-576x1024\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot_20160302-162323-576x1024-241x300.png 241w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Screenshot_20160302-162323-576x1024.png 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/>For specific directions, open up your favorite web browser and search for \u201cEnable auto update\u201d followed by the make and model of your phone.\u00a0 For updating apps, you can turn on auto updates through the Google Play app.\u00a0 Typically, this is reached by going into the Google Play app and going to Settings &gt; General.\u00a0 You should see \u201cAuto-update apps\u201d as an option.\u00a0 Again, I recommend updating over Wi-Fi only so you don\u2019t eat up your data plan.\u00a0 The specific steps might be different based on your phone, but this should point you in the right direction.<\/p>\n<p>Keep in mind, smartphones and tablets aren\u2019t the only things that need updating.\u00a0 Any media streaming device, like a Roku, FireTV or AppleTV will also need updating.\u00a0 I suggest doing a search for auto-update options for your device to find out the exact procedure.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the many things I do to keep my (and my family\u2019s) digital life safe.\u00a0 While it can seem like every day brings a new data breach or cyber-attack, by following some basic security practices like keeping your devices up to date we can make it more difficult for the bad guys.<\/p>\n<p>Updating is part of #<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HowILiveSafe?src=hash\">HowILiveSafe.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Stay on top of the latest consumer and mobile security threats by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/brucesnell\">following me<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McAfee_Home\">@McAfee_Home<\/a>\u00a0on Twitter, and \u2018Like\u2019 us on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/McAfee\">Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Stay Safe<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This blog was written by Bruce Snell.
