Victims were requested to provide \u201cMother\u2019s Maiden Name,\u201d \u201cFather\u2019s Middle Name,\u201d \u201cMaternal Grandmothers Name,\u201d or a \u201cMemorable Word.\u201d Attackers used that data to respond to security questions and obtain illegal access to the victims\u2019 bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Recently the McAfee Labs Mobile Research Team found a new variant of the well-known Android banking Trojan Acecard (aka Torec, due to the use of Tor to communicate with the control server) that goes far beyond just asking for financial information. In addition to requesting credit card information and second-factor authentication, the malicious application asks for a selfie with your identity document\u2014very useful for a\u00a0cybercriminal to confirm a victim&#8217;s identity and access not only to banking accounts, but probably also even social networks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Like most Android banking Trojans, this threat also tricks users into installing the malware by pretending to be an adult video app or a codec\/plug-in necessary to see a specific video:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53192 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_app_logos-1024x561.png\" alt=\"acecard_app_logos\" width=\"615\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_app_logos-1024x561.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_app_logos-300x164.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_app_logos-768x420.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_app_logos.png 1401w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 615px) 100vw, 615px\" \/><br \/>\nAs soon as the malicious app is executed by the user, it\u00a0hides the icon from the home launcher and constantly asks for device administrator privileges to make its removal difficult:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53193 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_DeviceAdmin-596x1024.png\" alt=\"acecard_deviceadmin\" width=\"244\" height=\"419\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_DeviceAdmin-596x1024.png 596w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_DeviceAdmin-175x300.png 175w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_DeviceAdmin.png 714w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><br \/>\nWhen it is running in the background, the malware constantly monitors the opening of specific apps to show the user its main phishing overlay, pretending to be Google Play and asking for a credit card number:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53199 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/AcecardPhishingOverlay-595x1024.png\" alt=\"acecardphishingoverlay\" width=\"259\" height=\"446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/AcecardPhishingOverlay-595x1024.png 595w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/AcecardPhishingOverlay-174x300.png 174w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/AcecardPhishingOverlay.png 712w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><br \/>\nOnce the credit card number is validated, the next phishing overlay asks for more personal and credit card information such as\u00a0cardholder name, date of birth, phone number, credit card expiration date, and CCV:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53196 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_phishing_overlay_personal-590x1024.png\" alt=\"acecard_phishing_overlay_personal\" width=\"270\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_phishing_overlay_personal-590x1024.png 590w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_phishing_overlay_personal-173x300.png 173w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_phishing_overlay_personal.png 707w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Depending on the type of the credit card that the user entered in the first\u00a0phishing overlay, the malware will also ask for a second factor of authentication:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53194 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_HK-1024x874.png\" alt=\"acecard_hk\" width=\"428\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_HK-1024x874.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_HK-300x256.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_HK-768x656.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_HK.png 1436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 428px) 100vw, 428px\" \/><br \/>\nIn the preceding\u00a0case, the malware asks for the HK (Hong Kong) ID. This new variant also targets users in Singapore, asking for the National Registration Identity Card and the Singaporean passport:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53198 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_SG-1024x710.png\" alt=\"acecard_sg\" width=\"442\" height=\"306\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_SG-1024x710.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_SG-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_SG-768x532.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_SG.png 1420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After collecting credit card and personal information from the victim, the malware offers a fake \u201cidentity confirmation\u201d that consists of three\u00a0steps. The first two steps ask the user to upload a clean and readable photo of the front and back side of the victim\u2019s identity document (national ID, passport, driver&#8217;s license):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53195 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_IdentityConf_Step1and2-1024x876.png\" alt=\"acecard_identityconf_step1and2\" width=\"448\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_IdentityConf_Step1and2-1024x876.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_IdentityConf_Step1and2-300x257.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_IdentityConf_Step1and2-768x657.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_IdentityConf_Step1and2.png 1436w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 448px) 100vw, 448px\" \/><br \/>\nThe final step asks for a selfie with the identity document:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-53197 \" src=\"https:\/\/securingtomorrow.mcafee.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_selfi-596x1024.png\" alt=\"acecard_selfi\" width=\"281\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_selfi-596x1024.png 596w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_selfi-175x300.png 175w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/Acecard_selfi.png 719w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 281px) 100vw, 281px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Why are Android banking Trojans so popular? One possible reason is the exploit kit GM Bot, whose source code was leaked in February. (IBM SecurityIntelligence <a href=\"https:\/\/securityintelligence.com\/android-malware-about-to-get-worse-gm-bot-source-code-leaked\/\">blogged<\/a> about it.)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Android banking Trojans such as\u00a0Acecard\u00a0are constantly evolving and improving their\u00a0social engineering attacks to gain\u00a0as much sensitive and private information as possible. Attackers want not only a\u00a0victim&#8217;s credit card information and different factors of authentication to financial services, but also a picture of the victim with identity document to remotely access to different systems. To protect yourselves from this threat, employ security software on your mobile, avoid downloading and installing apps from untrusted sources, and do not trust screens\u00a0that ask for financial and personal information.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">McAfee Mobile Security detects this threat as Android\/Torec and alerts mobile users if it is present, while protecting them from any data loss.
