But something many parents forget \u2013 the cyberthreats that could potentially impact our financial information could very well impact our children\u2019s, given they have credit cards of their own. As a matter of fact, there\u2019s a new law that helps parents with exactly that \u2013 protecting their kids\u2019 credit, amongst a few other things. It\u2019s called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.consumer.ftc.gov\/blog\/2018\/06\/free-credit-freezes-are-coming-soon-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act<\/a>, and it takes effect on September 21<sup>st<\/sup> of this year.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/new-on-parents-to-do-list-checking-childrens-credit-history-1535457603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this law<\/a> mean for parents and their kids? With this law, free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/learn\/security-freeze\/\">credit freezes<\/a> will be available for anyone \u2013 including children under the age of 16 \u2013 in the country (currently, there may be fees depending on state laws). That way, if a cybercriminal tries to open up an account with a minor\u2019s information, the impacted family can freeze that account immediately. Additionally, it will extend fraud alerts from 90 days to a full year.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of this law, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion will each set up a web page for requesting fraud alerts and credit freezes. The FTC will also post links to those web pages on IdentityTheft.gov.<\/p>\n<h2>Tips to Maximize Your Benefits<\/h2>\n<p>So, with this law coming into effect in no time, what next steps should parents take to reap its benefits? Start by following these tips:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Find out if your child has a credit report.<\/strong> First and foremost, head <a href=\"https:\/\/identitytheft.gov\/Steps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> and go to the \u2018Child Identity Theft\u2019 section. It will have instructions on how to find out if your child has a credit report. Most young children shouldn\u2019t have credit files, but if they do,\u00a0the page includes contact information for credit agencies and advice on how to freeze credit.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Keep the record of freezes in a safe place<\/strong>. If you do have to freeze a credit report, keep the records stored in a safe place. Make sure your family can find it when needed, and a crook can\u2019t access it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Invest in an identity\u00a0theft monitoring and recovery solution<\/strong>. The best way to protect you or a family member from identity theft is by being proactive. That\u2019s precisely why you should leverage a solution tool such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/consumer\/en-us\/microsite\/identity-protection\/overview.html?culture=EN-US&amp;cid=210317&amp;pir=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">McAfee Identity Theft Protection<\/a>, which allows users to take a proactive approach to protecting their identities with personal and financial monitoring and recovery tools to help keep their identities personal and
