\"\"\"NationalDon’t we all kinda secretly hope, even pretend, that our biggest fears are in the process of remedying themselves? Like believing that the police will know to stay close should we wander into a sketchy part of town. Or that our doors and windows will promptly self-lock should we forget to do so. Such a world would be ideal \u2014 and oh, so, peaceful \u2014 but it just isn’t reality. When it comes to making sure our families are safe we’ve got to be the ones to be aware, responsible, and take the needed action.<\/p>\n

Our Shared Responsibility<\/h2>\n

This holds true in making the internet a safe place. As much as we’d like to pretend there’s a protective barrier between us and the bad guys online, there’s no single government entity that is solely responsible for securing the internet. Every individual<\/em>\u00a0must play his or her role in protecting their portion of cyberspace, including the devices and networks they use. And, that’s what October \u2014 National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) \u2014 is all about.<\/p>\n

At McAfee,\u00a0we focus on these matters every day but this month especially, we are linking arms will safety organizations, bloggers, businesses, and YOU \u2014 parents, consumers, educators, and digital citizens \u2014 to zero in on ways we can all do our part to make the internet safe and secure for everyone. (Hey, sometimes the home team needs a huddle, right!?)<\/p>\n

8 specific things you can do!<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\"National<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Become a NCSAM Champion.<\/strong> The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSAM) is encouraging everyone \u2014 individuals, schools, businesses, government organizations, universities \u2014 to sign up, take action, and make a difference in online safety and security. It\u2019s free and simple to register<\/a>. Once you sign up you will get an email with a toolbox packed with fun, shareable memes to post for #CyberAware October.<\/li>\n
  2. Tap your social powers.<\/strong> Throughout October, share, share, share\u00a0great content you discover. Use the hashtag #CyberAware, so the safety conversation reaches and inspires more people. Also, join the Twitter chat using the hashtag #ChatSTC each Thursday in October at 3 p.m., ET\/Noon, PT. Learn, connect with other parents and safety pros, and chime in.\"National<\/li>\n
  3. Hold a family tech talk. <\/strong>Be even more intentional this month. Learn and discuss suggestions from\u00a0STOP. THINK. CONNECT.\u2122<\/a>\u00a0on how each family member can protect their devices and information.<\/li>\n
  4. Print it and post it: <\/strong>Print out a\u00a0STOP. THINK. CONNECT.\u2122 tip sheet<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and display it in areas where family members spend time online.<\/li>\n
  5. Understand and execute the basics.<\/strong>\u00a0Information is awesome.\u00a0But how much of that information do we truly put into action? Take 10 minutes to read\u00a010 Tips to Stay Safe Online<\/a> and another 10 minutes to make sure you take the time to install a firewall<\/a>, strengthen your passwords, and make sure your home network<\/a> as secure as it can be.\"National<\/li>\n
  6. If you care \u2014 share!\u00a0<\/strong>Send an email to friends and family\u00a0informing them that October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and\u00a0encourage them to visit\u00a0staysafeonline.org<\/a>\u00a0for tips and resources.<\/li>\n
  7. Turn on multi-factor authentication<\/strong>. Protect your financial, email and social media accounts with two-step authentication for passwords.<\/li>\n
  8. Update, update, update!<\/strong>\u00a0This overlooked but powerful way to shore up your devices is crucial. Update your software and turn on automatic updates to protect your home network and personal devices.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Isn’t it awesome to think that you aren’t alone in striving to keep your family’s digital life \u2014 and future \u2014 safe? A lot of people are working together during National Cyber Security Awareness Month to educate and be more proactive in blocking criminals online. Working together, no doubt, we’ll get there quicker and be able to create and enjoy a safer internet.<\/p>\n
