As my colleague Tad Heppner mentioned in his post, a scareware called MacDefender was spotted in the wild. Mac users can be fooled by those fake alerts because malware for Mac is growing. Also, fake alerts appear more and more elaborate each day.<\/div>\n<h2>Mac Protector<\/h2>\n<div>MacDefender has adopted new names and disguises as time passes, and one of its most recent names is Mac Protector.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/aboutmacprotector.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9191 aligncenter\" style=\"margin-top: 2px; margin-bottom: 2px; border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/aboutmacprotector.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"496\" height=\"184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/aboutmacprotector.png 496w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/aboutmacprotector-300x111.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The Trojan package downloaded from the web contains two more packages: <em>macprotector.pkg<\/em> and <em>macProtectorInstallerProgramPostflight.pkg<\/em>. The former is the application, and the latter contains a bash script that will launch Mac Protector once the installation is finished. The installation is the same as we are used to seeing, and it requires root privileges. (Every time an installer or application asks for admin rights, we need to stop and think whether it\u2019s the right thing to do.) The only file dropped is MacProtector.app, which is copied to the <em>\/Applications<\/em> directory.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Mac Protector is very sophisticated and uses a lot of resources to appear as a real anti-virus app to the user. There are a lot of images and sounds in the package that simulate system scanning, show the alerts, etc.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/files.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9196\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/files.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"384\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/files.png 914w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/files-300x201.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 384px) 100vw, 384px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Mac Protector will perform a fake scan on the system, and will show rootkits and spyware detections for real and current processes.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/virus_found.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9198\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/virus_found.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/virus_found.png 1070w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/virus_found-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/virus_found-1024x737.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But don\u2019t be fooled. Those detections are completely fake. In fact, what Mac Protector does is to find the processes running on the Mac and pick one of them.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/processes.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9199\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/processes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"462\" height=\"68\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/processes.png 578w, https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/processes-300x44.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Moreover, Mac Protector will open browser windows to pornographic sites to make users believe that they are truly infected.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/urls.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9200\" style=\"margin: 2px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mcafee.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/urls.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"68\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>During the scan and also once it is finished, the fake anti-virus will claim that to clean up the system, the user must register the app. It will load an embedded web page and ask the victims for their credit card data. As of today, the site is still alive; so be careful.
