With many\u00a0<\/span>people\u00a0<\/span>having their normal day to day life\u00a0<\/span>turned upside down<\/span>, scammers are\u00a0<\/span>capitalizing on consumers’ newfound lifestyles to\u00a0<\/span>make a financial gain<\/span>\u00a0or wreak havoc on users\u2019 devices<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Let\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>take a look<\/span>\u00a0at the most recent threats\u00a0<\/span>that have\u00a0<\/span>emerged<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>as a result of<\/span>\u00a0the pandemic<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fraudulent Relief Checks<\/h2>\n

On Wednesday March 25, the\u00a0<\/span>Senate passed a\u00a0<\/span>relief bill<\/span><\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<\/span>cont<\/span>ains<\/span>\u00a0a\u00a0<\/span>s<\/span>ubstantial<\/span>\u00a0increase in unemployment benefits for Americans\u00a0<\/span>who have lost their jobs or have\u00a0<\/span>been<\/span>\u00a0furloughed<\/span>\u00a0due<\/span>\u00a0to the economic fallout from the pande<\/span>mic<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>F<\/span>inancial scammers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are likely to\u00a0<\/span>use this as a<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0opportunity<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0steal money offered to Americans who are facing the\u00a0<\/span>negative economic effects of the pandemic<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0as t<\/span>hese crooks could make\u00a0<\/span>consumers believe\u00a0<\/span>they need to<\/span>\u00a0pay money as a condition of receiving government relief<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>The Federal Trade Commission\u00a0<\/span>issued a warning to consumers to be on the lookout for fraudulent activity\u00a0<\/span>as<\/span>\u00a0th<\/span>e government\u00a0<\/span>implements these<\/span>\u00a0financial relief packages.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Map Used to Track Pandemic Used to Spread Malware<\/h2>\n

According to security researcher\u00a0<\/span>Brian Krebs<\/span><\/a>, criminals have started\u00a0<\/span>disseminating<\/span>\u00a0real-time,\u00a0<\/span>accurate<\/span>\u00a0information about global infection rates to spread\u00a0<\/span>malware<\/span><\/a>. In one scheme, an interactive dashboard created by Johns Hopkins University is\u00a0<\/span>being used<\/span>\u00a0in malicious websites (and\u00a0<\/span>possibly in<\/span>\u00a0spam emails) to spread password-stealing malware.\u00a0 Additionally, Krebs flagged a digital pandemic infection kit, which allows other criminals to\u00a0<\/span>purchase<\/span>\u00a0a bundled version of the map with the scammer\u2019s preferred attack method.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Texts,\u00a0WhatsApp,\u00a0and\u00a0TikTok\u00a0Spread Falsehoods<\/h2>\n

Due to the nature of the rapidly evolving pandemic, criminals are taking advantage<\/span>\u00a0of the situation<\/span>\u00a0by spreading misinformation.\u00a0<\/span>As more communities\u00a0<\/span>are\u00a0<\/span>being\u00a0<\/span>ordered<\/span>\u00a0to shelter in place<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>misleading text messages announcing a national quarantine claiming to come from the White House buzzed onto cell phones a<\/span>round the U.S.\u00a0<\/span>According to the\u00a0<\/span>Washington Post<\/span><\/a>, the\u00a0<\/span>fraudulent text messages encouraged users to<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0\u201cStock up on whatever you guys need to make sure you have a two-week supply of everything. Please forward to your network.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>These fake texts spread so widely that the White House\u2019s National Security Council\u00a0<\/span>debunked the misleading claims in a Twitter post stating, \u201cText message rumors of a national #quarantine are FAKE. There is no national lockdown.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Communication apps like WhatsApp and\u00a0<\/span>social media platforms like\u00a0<\/span>TikTok<\/span>\u00a0have carried similar examples<\/span>\u00a0of this misinformation<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Robocalls Offering Free Test Kits and Low-Cost Health Insurance<\/h2>\n

On top of fraudulent\u00a0<\/span>messages floating around via SMS, WhatsApp, and\u00a0<\/span>TikTok<\/span>, scammers are also using robocalls to spread misinformation around the global pandemic<\/span>, especially as more users are at home and available to answer phone calls\u00a0<\/span>as a result of<\/span>\u00a0self-isolation<\/span>. According to\u00a0<\/span>CNN<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>robocalls from more than 60 different phone numbers<\/span>\u00a0are<\/span>\u00a0falsely<\/span>\u00a0offering low-priced health insurance\u00a0<\/span>and free coronavirus test kits<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Another type of robocall asks users to sign a petition to ban flights from China<\/span>. Criminals are taking advantage of the fact that\u00a0<\/span>new information<\/span>\u00a0around the pandemic is constantly\u00a0<\/span>being released<\/span>, presenting them with an opportunity to\u00a0<\/span>scam<\/span>\u00a0users by impersonating local and federal officials.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay\u00a0Safe Online\u00a0With These Tips<\/h2>\n

During this time of uncertainty,\u00a0<\/span>it can be difficult to decipher what is fact from fiction. When it comes to\u00a0<\/span>the potential online threats around the recent pandemic,\u00a0<\/span>here\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0what you can do to stay protected:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Only trust official news sources<\/h3>\n

Be sure to only trust reputable news sites. This will help you filter out fake information\u00a0<\/span>that is just adding to the noise across the internet.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t\u00a0share your personal or financial data<\/h3>\n

Although financial relief checks are not yet a reality, know that the federal government will not ask you to pay fees or charges upfront to receive these fu<\/span>nds. Additionally, the government will not ask you for your Social Security number, bank account, or cre<\/span>dit card number.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Beware of messages from unknown users<\/h3>\n

If you receive a text, email, social media message, or phone call from an unknown user\u00a0<\/span>reg<\/span>arding<\/span>\u00a0the pandemic,\u00a0<\/span>it\u2019s<\/span>\u00a0best to\u00a0<\/span>proceed<\/span>\u00a0with caution and avoid interacting with the message altogether.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Go directly to the source<\/h3>\n

If you receive information\u00a0<\/span>regarding<\/span>\u00a0the pandemic from\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>n unknown<\/span>\u00a0user<\/span>, go directly to the source instead of clicking on links within messages or attachments. For example,\u00a0<\/span>users should only trust the map tracking the pandemic\u2019s spread found on the\u00a0<\/span>Johns Hopkins website<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>Using a tool like\u00a0<\/span>McAfee\u00a0<\/span>WebAdvisor<\/span><\/a>\u00a0can help users\u00a0<\/span>stay safe from similar threats while searching the web.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
