If the challenges\u00a0of\u00a0working from home, connecting with\u00a0family, and\u00a0keeping on top of the news\u00a0have you\u00a0grabbing your phone\u00a0more than ever, you\u2019re not alone.\u00a0Unfortunately,\u00a0scammers\u00a0are capitalizing on this\u00a0opportunity.\u00a0From\u00a0fake apps, and\u00a0dangerous text messages\u00a0to\u00a0phishing\u00a0phone calls, mobile scams are multiplying, potentially putting your\u00a0personal data and\u00a0devices at risk.<\/p>\n

In fact, the Federal Trade Commission\u00a0recently warned\u00a0<\/a>that they received\u00a0a spike in user complaints as fraudsters look to take advantage of\u00a0the current state of affairs.\u00a0Fortunately, there are\u00a0a few things you can do to protect your privacy and\u00a0security.<\/p>\n

But first,\u00a0here\u00a0are a few things\u00a0to\u00a0watch\u00a0out for:<\/p>\n

Fake Apps<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Looking for apps to help you track health information and find supplies? The scammers\u00a0have you covered. They\u2019ve released a number of malicious\u00a0health-related\u00a0apps designed to\u00a0track\u00a0you\u00a0instead. These\u00a0phony\u00a0apps\u00a0may ask for access to your photos, files, and location,\u00a0or use spyware that can remotely turn on your camera or microphone.<\/p>\n

One\u00a0dodgy\u00a0app\u00a0offers\u00a0to\u00a0help you locate N-95 masks, but\u00a0don\u2019t download it. If you do, the app\u00a0locks your device and demands a ransom to unlock it. This just shows how common forms of attack, like\u00a0ransomware, evolve with current events.<\/p>\n

Another handful of phony apps making the rounds appear to be for popular video conferencing platform Zoom, which has seen exponential growth as more people work from home. But installing these phony apps can download malware instead, so make sure you go to the official company\u2019s app.<\/p>\n

Risky\u00a0Text Messages<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Phishing by text message, or\u00a0\u201csmishing<\/a>,\u201d continues to\u00a0be\u00a0a popular way to\u00a0hook\u00a0mobile users. The scammers are usually trying to get you to click on a link,\u00a0which sends you to a risky website\u00a0or downloads\u00a0malware onto your device.\u00a0We\u2019ve seen recent\u00a0smishing\u00a0attempts asking to verify personal and banking information in order to \u201crelease\u201d government stimulus funds or consolidate debt. Others attempt\u00a0to sell you in-demand medical supplies at a discount, such as surgical masks, or fake health insurance.<\/p>\n

Sometimes the\u00a0senders\u00a0will \u201cspoof\u201d\u00a0a\u00a0government\u00a0or\u00a0business\u00a0phone\u00a0number, so it appears to come from an official\u00a0entity. Just remember that governments\u00a0and banks will never contact you directly, asking for personal information or money.<\/p>\n

Phishing<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0Calls<\/strong><\/h3>\n

With\u00a0voice-over-internet technology\u00a0making robocalls cheap and easy, the scammers can\u2019t help but inundate us with new\u00a0topical\u00a0scams. We\u2019ve seen reports of robocalls offering phony\u00a0medical\u00a0treatments or free test kits if you respond with your information.\u00a0Others like<\/p>\n

charity requests, such as one that appears to come from the\u00a0World\u00a0Health\u00a0Organization, asking for a donation to an emergency relief fund.<\/p>\n

How to Stay Safe<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Scammers always try to take advantage of uncertainty and big news events that capture our attention. Here\u2019s how\u00a0to stay safe:<\/p>\n

Be hyperaware when receiving any type of call or message<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Always be suspicious of unsolicited\u00a0calls,\u00a0texts, social media\u00a0messages,\u00a0and e-mails. If you question the\u00a0identity\u00a0of the person, it is best not to interact at all. If a suspicious message appears to come from a friend, call them directly to see if their phone was hacked.\u00a0Do not click on links or open attachments\u00a0from anyone unless you\u2019re sure the communication is authentic.<\/p>\n

Never share your personal or financial data<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Never give your personal and financial information over the phone or via text. If you are pressured to do so, go directly to the source.\u00a0\u00a0Call the supposed institution asking for your information directly.<\/p>\n

Be careful about which apps you download<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Only download apps from reputable app stores and check the app\u2019s reviews before purchasing.<\/p>\n

Look into a spam blocker<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n

Many phone carriers offer a service or app that helps identify and filter out spam calls. This can help greatly minimize those phishing calls.<\/p>\n

Practice safe surfing & shopping<\/u><\/strong>
\n<\/strong>When surfing or shopping on your mobile device, go directly to the legitimate website or reputable app instead of clicking on links in messages. You can also avoid risky websites by having the Safe Web<\/strong> (safe browsing tool) turned on in McAfee Mobile Security.<\/p>\n
