Many students hold their college experience near and dear to their hearts.\u00a0<\/span>Apart from working\u00a0<\/span>toward<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0a degree\u00a0<\/span>and a<\/span>\u00a0desired career path,\u00a0<\/span>students rely on college to<\/span>\u00a0make lifelong friends<\/span>\u00a0and<\/span>\u00a0gain\u00a0<\/span>a heightened sense of<\/span>\u00a0responsibility and independence<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>But due to recent circumstances, many college students had this experience interrupted<\/span>\u00a0or put on pause.\u00a0<\/span>With ma<\/span>ny schools closed for the remainder of the year,\u00a0<\/span>college students\u00a0<\/span>have\u00a0<\/span>mov<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0from\u00a0<\/span>in-person course work to virtual classrooms<\/span>, or distance learning<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Distance learning has consequentially led to a\u00a0<\/span>rapid<\/span>\u00a0uptick in online learning\u00a0<\/span>among college students.\u00a0<\/span>But<\/span>\u00a0as more students continue their curriculum from home<\/span>\u00a0and online activity increases<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the need for\u00a0<\/span>enhanced security increases as well.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Video Lectures<\/h2>\n

The transition to distance learning has led to many teachers and schools\u00a0<\/span>turning to online\u00a0<\/span>video conferencing<\/span><\/a>\u00a0tools to conduct virtual lectures. However, many of these tools\u00a0<\/span>have proven to lack<\/span>\u00a0the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>necessary security measures.\u00a0<\/span>As we\u2019ve previously discussed, many users have been found sharing their meeting links on social media platforms like Twitter.\u00a0<\/span>This could allow an attacker to simply click on one of these links and interrupt an online lecture or club meeting with inappropriate content.\u00a0<\/span>As a result, students could lose valuable time meant to be spent toward their education.\u00a0<\/span>And while some schools have\u00a0<\/span>banned\u00a0<\/span>some<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>online conferencing\u00a0<\/span>tools<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>from being used for distance learning, it\u2019s important for students to stay educated on the various security risks\u00a0<\/span>involved with video lectures, whether their school has provided guidelines or not.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Connected Devices\u00a0& Home Networks<\/h2>\n

Many schools and universities have asked for students to move out of their on-campus housing for the remainder of the sch<\/span>ool year. Moving off campus means that the\u00a0<\/span>devices and\u00a0<\/span>school\u00a0<\/span>network<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0provided by a campus may no longer be available to students.\u00a0<\/span>While many students already leverage their personal device<\/span>\u00a0for schoolwork, this situation makes\u00a0<\/span>those devices the<\/span>\u00a0only option.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Additionally, m<\/span>uch like those who have made the transition to working from home, using personal de<\/span>vices on home networks could pose a variety of threats.\u00a0<\/span>Students are moving from their universities\u2019 professionally managed networks to home Wi-Fi\u00a0<\/span>setups protected with basic passwords<\/span>, which are usually more easily infiltrated by hackers. Once\u00a0<\/span>a hacker gains access to a student\u2019s home network, they have the opportunity to exploit other devices\u00a0<\/span>connected to the Wi-Fi.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some tips to help ensure that learning from home goes as smoothly as possible.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Choose an Encrypted Online Conferencing Tool<\/h3>\n

Does the video conferencing tool you\u2019re considering use end-to-end encryption? This ensures that only meeting participants have the ability to decrypt secure meeting content. Additionally, be sure to read the privacy policies listed by the video conferencing programs to find the one that is the most secure and fits your needs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Use a VPN<\/h3>\n
