For technology to be effective, individuals and corporations must be able to trust it. McAfee believes that trust in the integrity of systems—whether a corporate firewall or a child’s mobile phone—is essential to enabling people to get the most out of their technologies. Fundamental to that trust is privacy as well as the protection of personal data. McAfee is committed to protecting customers, consumers, and employees.

Our privacy policies describe our approach to privacy based on the best-known methods designed to protect privacy, while removing artificial barriers and facilitating business by enabling worldwide free information flow. A combination of policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines are used to drive the effective management of personally identifiable information in the operational business processes and development of products and services, enabling customers and employees to enjoy the benefit of digital devices.

Privacy by Design (PbD) and Security by Design (SbD) require that companies proactively consider both disciplines when creating products and services, and when implementing internal tools. PbD and SbD also encourage the implementation of accountability processes in the development of technologies and the delivery of services.

As more digital devices are connected to the internet, there will be an increasing need for data and applications to be shared among devices and for data to be stored remotely (like servers in data centers), with augmented focus on the balance of performance, power management, and security. For there to be appropriate protections for this data, there will need to be an increased focus on security of the networks and the individual endpoint devices. To allow devices to connect to a network, some device information (such as IP addresses) will need to be collected and processed. McAfee believes that the processing of device information needs to be recognized as necessary for protecting privacy by better securing the data.

Importance to McAfee

McAfee believes privacy is fundamental to our corporate goals that individuals trust their use of technology. Privacy is a necessary element of that trust. We are committed to protecting the reasonable privacy expectations of everyone we do business with, including customers, consumers, and employees.

Protecting data—personal data and intellectual property—is a core value for consumers and enterprises alike.

Privacy is an essential part of McAfee’s brand—and a key part of brand equity. We strive to comply with all applicable laws and regulations.

Key points

  • Privacy and security are necessary prerequisites for individuals to have trust in the use of technology.
  • The PbD accountability model should be incorporated into vendor and service providers’ product development lifecycle, making certain that privacy is included as a foundational component of the product and service development process.
  • Any new legislation and/or regulations related to digital privacy should include the concept of PbD, which requires the proactive implementation of accountability processes in the development of technologies. Legislators and regulators should avoid imposing mandatory compliance to detailed standards or mandatory third-party detailed product reviews, as this would increase both time to market and product costs. Negative impacts on innovation such as these are exacerbated in situations when it is unclear whether third parties would have the appropriate resources or skill sets to effectively review the technology.
  • McAfee believes the processing of device information is necessary to connect to the internet and provide reasonable security for personal information.
