The Security Paradox

The Security Paradox

Midsize organizations today face a “security paradox”—threats are up (and growing in severity), but IT security budgets are down. Taking full advantage of this paradox are cybercriminals and disgruntled employees, who attack networks and systems, and steal sensitive information.

  • 1 in 5 midsize organizations had a security incident that directly caused their organization to lose revenue—$41,000 on average.
  • In China, 38% of businesses had an incident, with an average loss of $85,000.
  • The average number of cyberattacks against midsize organizations in the United States jumped 322% from 2008 – 2009.
  • Seventy percent of businesses believe there is some chance that a serious data breach could put their company out of business. Yet about that same number of businesses froze or cut their IT security budgets to focus their resources on building or retaining their businesses.

“The Security Paradox” is the first global study to quantify the cost of reactive versus proactive security in a midsize organization.
